brit-gob 9
What's peoples thoughts on that TV earthquake warning message on tv that comes just before a strong quake is felt. I'm sure it's very clever and I realise it will be life-saving in some cases, but it sure scares the hell out of me. Those seconds after hearing it and waiting are the longest there are. muikabochi 208
They are really scary, no I do not like them. We had a few that said Niigata, but they didn't turn out to be that big. But waiting was and increased heartbeat etc was baaaaad.
grungy-gonads 54
Just had one of them for Chiba/Ibaraki. Not a nice sound!
snowdude 44
They come up on my phone too, rings with a very fast loud tone while vibrating. It keeps your heart beat nice and high.
muikabochi 208
Do you have to sign up for those? Not that I want to get them!
Slippery Jim 65
Yeah, there's some function on your mobile you dial to get and set it.
muikabochi 208
I see. I'll be sure not to dial that then!
spacefrog 0
I prefer it to having the quake hit without me knowing. I mean at least I know it's coming and can brace for it and know what magnitude it is. pretty cool stuff
Mintyjulep 0
It seems a bit silly - speaking from my perspective that our power went out faster than the quake moved.
big-will 7
Well it's useful for different people MintyNZ. If you are close, it might not be in time. But for people a little further out, it often does beat the shaking.
muikabochi 208
Yes for a few of the big ones that warning came up on our TV, a few seconds later we saw the tv studio shaking... and then we had a little wobble ourselves here a little bit later. So it is useful to a lot of people, though personally I really do not like it. I suppose it's the quakes I really don't like, but like I said those seconds are just the worst. bobby12 0
Its good tv and has some safety benefits too, so everyones a winner.
snowdude 44
No I never sighned up for the earthquake early warning, it was already on my phone, but when ever there is a big earthquake it goes off like an air rade siren.
grungy-gonads 54
Don't know about the phone one and actually don't really want to.
Tubby Beaver 209
my girlfriend has the phone one, its like an air raid siren from the war, freaks me right out
BillTheBinMan 0
A few of my friends have them and i CERTAINLY don't want it on my phone. Give me a heart attack too many of them.
egglesby 1
Shocked first time I heard that. Turned it off!!
sanjo 2
Well I know what I do when I hear that. And indeed when a feel an earthquake.... Tense up. Get into survival mode. Freeze. Rational thought doesn't really come into it. I bet that tsunami warning saved a heck of a lot of people though. Can you imagine if people hadn't been warned?!
BagOfCrisps 24
Can someone find a youtube clip of this to show us what it is like? Does it interrupt the programme you are watching or something?

grungy-gonads 54
Here's the Shizuoka one that happened while NHK news was on, about 1:25 in. Just as they were reporting another strong earthquake in the north. Felt like Japan was under siege.

@tokyo 14
Lets hope we have had our share for the foreseeable future of those things. I think we could all do with a rest from it all now.
