Tubby Beaver 209
hi Echi, I'm really sorry for your loss and the heartbreak of 1 person still unnaccounted for, please don't take our joking to be making light of the terrible situation up there, its a response to the fear mongering Western Media that drove many previously sane people to flee by describing Tokyo and the rest of Japan as going to be a burned out, Nuclear Desert. After the smoke was spotted at the southeast of the building around 3:55 p.m., TEPCO said it had temporarily evacuated its workers from the site as it assessed the situation. The amount of smoke later decreased, TEPCO added. Following a magnitude 9.0 quake and ensuing tsunami on March 11, cooling functions of the No. 3 reactor were lost and its core is believed to have partially melted. At present, coolant water is pumped into the reactor and a pool for spent nuclear fuel. The roof and upper walls of the building that houses the No. 3 reactor were blown off by a hydrogen explosion last week. On Sunday, pressure in the No. 3 reactor's containment vessel temporarily rose, but it later stabilized. From kyodo

@tokyo 14
That geiger counter page thing is showing a bit of an increase. What is an "alarming" rise? Just now it's a steady and slight going up...

Just now it's a steady and slight going up... 25cpm is about 0.25uSv, which is normal levels. I would say, if it got to 100, and stayed above 100 for a prolonger time, then it would be worrying. RobBright 35
And the gradual, sorry, very slight rise, could be because of the rain.
brit-gob 9
The grey smoke is probably the workers all having a fag on one of their coffee breaks. Or perhaps even the kettle.
