Hi Guys

I most probably asked a similar question last year.

But asking again anyway.

Does anyone know the exchange rate at Toyko Narita or Sapporo from AUD to JPY or should I get it hear for 78.36.

Cheers

Yeah I am with you Pete in most countries but in Japan I am not sureand am only in the airports.

And I know you wouldn't change money in Bali at the airport.

Airport will be more expensive than in the city, but apart from that, as the rates change daily, best to look on the website.

Narita Airport Bureau d'change locations

There is a list of banks that operate bureau d'change offices on that website, so perhaps taking their names, and then doing a search on google will show you each bank's rate.

Seemore. I recommend order/purchase it online with travelex. Done some research and out of WA that will give you the best rate. You can have it delivered to a number of Kiosks (including the airport i think). I doubt you will find better in Japan.

Avoid the airports and banks where possible. Airports tend to try and capitalise on the "last minute forex" some people try and get done, you know, the money you forgot to exchange but really need it when you land and the exchange rate is not the first thing on your mind.

Banks tend to just be.. well.. banks?

The rates tend to be better with independents, for example, I know a few currency exchange agencies that specialise in JPY/AUD investments and they tend to have great AUD->JPY rates but mediocre JPY->AUD rates. It's also easier to find better rates in your home country because at least it's easier to ask around.

Australian Dollar gets shitty exchange rates in Japan. Take USD.

All being said, If you are talking 50grand AUD or half a mil, sure it´s a big deal. BUT we are probably talking 5 grand. Just fussing about saving money for a cup of expensive coffee or a meal IMHO. Yeah, of course it all adds up wink

Have always wondered this. Wondered if you could play the system, and as Jynxx says, it is **** all on something as small as 5k.

If I were to change £ to $ to ¥ or £ to ¥ which would get the better rate.

And it's exactly the same. biggrin Well .23 yen out according to XE.com.

But you need to consider the 'cut' or fee's that the exchange peeps take out of that conversion. Would be great if you could get the XE rate, and have no fee's, but you lose on every exchange. Only possible way to play the system is the do something like buy up US dollars with Aussie when it is at parity and then hold until it bounces back and buy Yen with it then...

Sure.

But consider the interest you are not getting for holding that amount.

Plus, you are speculating as to when the rates are going to change in the future and if that will coincide with your travel plans

Yeah on the day 1 -2 % difference will not make much difference. However saved a bit on my Niseko accomodation by paying it off when the JPY was at a high against the AUD (more luck than judgement). Paid the deposit at 75 JPY - AUD and paid the ballance at 80 JPY - AUD.

Hey Pete

Tried to PM but says your or my PM limit is up.

"Cool I board as well would love to get some turns in with a few people if you don't mind me tagging along.

Am staying at the Terry Hotel in Happo but from what I can work out there is a bus service that zooms around to echoland.

What about you where are you staying?"
