SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 178 Posted November 11, 2010 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted November 11, 2010 We are going to be making a few changes in the coming weeks to make it clear to people which resorts are "closed". When I say closed, I mean that they are there but they do not open in winter for one reason or another. For example, Arai in Niigata. Defunt, not operational,.... we are having a few discussions as to how to label those resorts - needs to be clear but short and sweet, and I thought it might be a good idea to get some feedback. A simple "closed" will not be clear enough and possibly confusing. What do you think might be best? Thanks for any feedback.
grungy-gonads 54
Dead! How about "Closed down". Do dead resorts ever come back to life?
RobBright 35
Not operating.
Schneebored 0
Could you label it closed, then have a 'more info' pop-up appear when the cursor runs over the text?
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 178 Posted November 11, 2010 Author SnowJapan Admin Share Posted November 11, 2010 Thanks for the ideas. I think I would prefer avoiding popups and just have it as clear as possible. That's my thoughts anyway.
iiyamadude 6
Not operating - thats a good one.
Ezorisu 0
"Shut down"? Reserve the "closed" word for "this resort is in fact still in business, but it hasn't opened yet because the conditions are not right".
muikabochi 208
"Not operating" is short and is just right I reckon.
@tokyo 14
æº–å‚™ä¸ Yep I think the Not Operating one is good.
Tubby Beaver 209
why not just dump them off the pages? Has any of these "non-operational" ski-jo's ever came back and started operating again?
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 178 Posted November 11, 2010 Author SnowJapan Admin Share Posted November 11, 2010 Well, if we delete the record of the resort, then all the resort reviews and photos etc will also come off the site. It seems a shame to get rid of all of that and I think that info will be of interest to some people. We do want to make it very clear to anyone looking at any resort page on the site whether a resort is 'current' or not. They will also be able to search only for resorts that are currently operating etc.
Tubby Beaver 209
Could you then have a section that was for the closed down resorts....."A Ye Olde Ski-Jo from Bygone Years" where there is a list and all the data?
SKI 15
Don't delete them. I sometimes like taking a look back at Arai.
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 178 Posted November 11, 2010 Author SnowJapan Admin Share Posted November 11, 2010 The way we are planning to set it up, something like that will certainly be possible TB.
Thundercat 60
Would 'shut down' suffice? Not operating is fine but it gives the impression that it may operate again one day (in my opinion at least)
big-will 7
I presume somewhere you will explain it. "Not operational" = a resort that has closed down for good or is currently not opening during winter Something like that
BagOfCrisps 24
Great you will implement that, right now it is a bit confusing - so that will be a really good improvement.
panhead_pete 27
Are there many? Thinks Big Will is onto it. Maybe "non-operational 2010/11 season".
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 178 Posted November 11, 2010 Author SnowJapan Admin Share Posted November 11, 2010 There's actually quite a few. We haven't assigned all the settings yet but I think it might be quite shocking. Or maybe not. Mostly tiny places. It will all be very clear once this is done!
Mike Pow 52
Taking Iwanai and Mt Weiss on Hokkaido as examples how about the prefix R.I.P. - Rest in Powder

iiyamadude 6
I agree this is a good thing - I was wondering why you hadn't flagged them up like this before now.
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 178 Posted November 12, 2010 Author SnowJapan Admin Share Posted November 12, 2010 Yes it is something we wanted to - and should have - done before. But it made sense to wait until we could do it properly. We made some considerable changes to our main database this summer and a lot of re-organisation of things. Now that that is done, it is a good time to be able to implement this as well. Hopefully this, as well as the update to the individual resort data for most resorts, will be completed by mid-December. It will take a fair while but will be worth it when we are finally up to date.
