It is the market - whatever is in short supply increases in price.

But in this case the hotel industry are shooting themselves and tourism in general in the foot.

Just imagine if all the other world airlines left people to struggle, had families sleeping on airport floors with no support for days or weeks...

And then imagine Qantas providing all stranded travelers with accommodation, meals and current information. Imagine the hotels making deals with the airlines to house those patrons with dignity and respect and charge Qantas just a little more than it cost to do so.

Imagine if Qantas approached a market leader like Coles to provide sandwiches, drinks and fruit free of charge to travellers waiting in the airport terminal.

Imagine the positive publicity.

Imagine the satisfied and delighted customers who would return again and again.

Imagine the dissatisfied customers of other airlines who would see the positive experience of Qantas customers and choose to fly with them next time.

Problem is none of these exec's have any imagination at all. Let alone compassion.

They probably realise that things don't work that way sadly.

They would surely get good publicity, but would it be worth as much $$ as what they can all get now? After all, thnk of how many people still fly BA and hate them. Is there really much loyalty to any airlines?

Well I reckon it cost them countless thousands to produce that lovely choir advert that they keep updating all the time - bet that bought less loyalty than it would get them if they treated their customers the way they would like to be treated!!!

Quote:
Steeper-than-usual hotel prices is another passenger complaint. In Hong Kong, Busi Daniel, a 39-year-old French tourist, said he spent Sunday night in a hotel after his flight was canceled. But a huge jump in price meant he would be forced to sleep at the airport on Monday.

"Yesterday, we had a hotel room at 250 euros. At midday, it was 460 euros, and in the evening, the price was 800 euros for a room — we can't pay that," he said Monday as he waited at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines' counter in Hong Kong's airport.

This bit is made up. There are so many hotel rooms in HK, they can just go next door. And there are so many hostel rooms too.

What a load of bollocks that article is.

A lot of people here have proven that taking out holiday insurance is worth that little bit extra.

Why should the airlines have to fork out for the tourists if they didn't take out insurance?

Sorry but it's a model of today's society whereby some people expect something essentially for free. Admittedly hotel's suddenly overcharging for rooms is a idiotic thing to do, but how do we know if its was planned before the eruption happened or not?

I do feel sorry for the people stuck thousands of miles away from home, but come on, phone up your local embassy, get them to help transfer money from your or a family's bank.

If they travelled on a package bought and protected by ATOL then aren't they covered? Also some insurance policies do cover natural disasters for example DIRECT LINE has been mentioned in the press for covering them. I think. omg

I can imagine how rapidly it could deteriorate for a family stuck oversea's without travel insurance, or without cover from that insurance - or indeed bearing the up front costs of such an unforseen event before the insurer sorts themselves out.

Most people can manage a contingency of a day or two - but for every day beyond that you find more and more people unable to cope.

Just talked to my dentists secretary - she is also not sure why he has been effected in the US, but there have been flight path changes and re routing going on to get him home. Quite strange.

usually there is a section in most policies that says that the policy is void in an act of war or an act of god (natural disaster) so people will not be covered. Bet those who didn't buy insurance are laughing it up right now!!

wink
