Last night there was a period of about 3 hours when our web connection at home was down - some sort of network problems. Just 3 hours, but it clearly demonstrated how much we now rely on the connection. I was waiting for mails, the lady was in the middle of doing some shopping at John Lewis. Panic!

Scary how reliant we are on it now, and getting more and more.

Actually I seem to have some strange problem going on with my home connection. Sometimes it seems to be connected by says "Local Only" (instead of Local & Internet). I need to turn the modem and router both off and on again which seems to fix it up for the most part but not always. Quite annoying for sure.

I get the same thing - modem needs rebooting.
When we first set up our network (3 wireless laptops, 4 reticulated PC's, all running on the one connection) it happened a LOT.
Now it happens about once a month or so.
Easy fixed though - unplug modem, wait a few seconds, plug back in ... all working by the time I get back upstairs.

In many cases, the "switch off - wait bit and switch on" thing actually works because the item in question is waiting a command (or some instruction from the connected device) that it is not getting. The switch off, then on again, clears the instruction queue, allowing the system to operate again.

One of the favourite things I had to do was clear the printer queue, it was simple to do, but when people are panicking about the printer not wprking, it is easy to look like a hero! clear the print queue, all good! "Oh, Thank you JA!" from many users! Love it!

Good explanation that JA.

I thought it was just clevr tech brainy stuff.

I prefer not knowing that there's a reason on/off works, coz it's just funny.

The internet is a key tool for keeping me sane here in China. Its such a good feeling to be able to chat with friends during the day via IM or at night via Facebook and Skype. Yes there are ways around the Great (fire) wall of China smile Without it Im not sure how I would be coping, although we all did prior to it, even those that moved to foriegn countries. If I was to not have it for an extended period it certainly would be an issue too.

I'd actually like to try "life without it" just for a short time.

Friend of mine hasdone just that actually. She lives in the country, doesn't watch TV, doesn't use the internet for things other than essential work. She has no idea who all the silly celebs are, hardly knows anything about world news..... but she has a great lifestyle and loves it. She seems unburdended with lots of the rubbish that invades our lives and really isn't interested in letting it in.

I use the interwebby thingy regularly (check emails at least daily, more often usually) but still cannot understand why people give a rats about the stupid "celebrities".

I mean, I watch a movie, the actor is preteending to be someone else, and if they do a good job, I believe that they are that other person. If the movieis good, they are not their real persona, they are the "pretend" persona. I do not care who they are in real life, wnat they do, who they shag (or don't, as the case may be) I am only concerned with the depiction they do on screen.

Not only that, but I don't bother remembering their names. Why would I? They are just people who pretend for a living. Nothing special, certainly not better than real people I know.

You don't have to become a hermit to not care about these fools. You just have to not believe (almost everything) what the gossip mags/"news"/and papers say about them. Who give a rats? Not me! horse

OK I know you picked up on the celeb thing but that wasn't the main point. She isn't a hermit, but she is just interested in living her life and not interested in sitting behind a computer pressing buttons. She loves to read books, go to the theater, play in a local band, ride horses, go out with her dog, play tennis, climb mountains, go for long walks. Possibly one of the most active people I know.
