meat 0
Yesterday I went skiing and didn't take my poles. I wanted to see what it was like. And it was great. I found myself going faster and perhaps curiously with more confidence. I'm always going to forget the poles from now I think. The only downside I could see was 'walking'. I can imagine it not being good in moguls and really rough terrain, but seeing as though I don't like moguls that doesn't affect me.
gareth_oau 2
get yrself something telescopic, you can pop em in yr pocket when not needed and whip em out when traversing
brit-gob 9
Stoopid question perhaps but why do "funski" people never seem to use poles?
Tubby Beaver 209
are funski people the ones on the tiny snow blade things?
brit-gob 9
I think so! Or maybe a bit bigger than tiny but still really small. I'm treading in areas that I really know nowt about so please don't laugh!
Go Native 70
They don't look that fun to me. And skiing without poles is also a little nutty as far as I'm concerned. Meat you're obviously not skiing off-piste.
meat 0
Correct, Go Native. Terribly uncool, I know. (As were I would say easily more than 95% of the people at the resort yesterday).
mitchpee 10
I do have some friends that ski without poles a lot. They mostly do park though. I have done it and it is MUCH easier to grab in any variety of spins, however I don't like the style. To each their own though!
Chriselle 158
As an old hockey player, skiing without poles is akin to skating without having a hockey stick in your hands....feels kind of weird.
klingon 10
I'd guess most skiers would feel kind of weird without them at first simply because they are so used to it.
mals 0
My kids where initially taught to ski without poles. apparently allows them to concentrate on getting body position right without distraction. Once they had that mastered they moved them to steeper slopes and poles.
gerard 6
Fun skis, skiing without poles.... Whatever. It's like swimming laps with waterwings on.
meat 0
Well, it didn't feel like that. As I said, I enjoyed it.
gerard 6
Do you use those little skis?
meat 0
No, 'normal' skis.
gerard 6
That's good.
SKI 15
I can see the appeal on groomed slopes but I wouldn't wanting to be without. Whatever floats your boat though and if it makes you feel more confident sounds like a good thing.
Yuki's Passion 1
I broke my black diamonds in a massive stack at Furano and skied without poles for a bit myself before finishing. It was weird at first, but I actually liked it too. A lot harder (it felt) in powder though!
Oyuki kigan 0
i tried skiing for the first time in about 17 years a few seasons ago, and couldn't get into the poles thing either. It was more fun to ride without them. However, after 4 runs, i couldn't get back into the skiing thing, either.
thursday 1
You just can't do that in powder. Even knee deep powder.
Metabo Oyaji 71
I guess I can do with or without poles for generic schussing, though there is some comfort feeling from tucking them under the armpits. Also very handy to have them when standing in a sloped lift line (to avoid plowing into the person in front). In practice, I end up carrying two sets of poles rather often, whenever the kid decides to go freehand.
3pin 0
To have pole gives us more options and the more options we have as skiers the better we are. Aside from the obvious use in an up hill travel situation we use them in 2 main ways when skiing downhill. The 'running ' pole use is a timing devise for longer groomer type turns. The ' blocking ' pole plant is used in the steeps and the bumps essentially to block the body from continuing down the hill. It allows the feet to catch up to the body. Missing these blocking pole plants in the bumps can be fatal at times. To have or not to have poles depends on the options we want.
Yuki's Passion 1
Poles are also great for hitting other snowboarders and skiers with. Funny how snowboarders start crying for poles when they get stuck and cant traverse. Especially those with splitboards. Just ski FFS!
thursday 1
I have really nice white carbon poles. They look gay, but I don't care.
