There is a possibility I will be in tokyo for business February 2010.

can I buy a domestic ticket to get me to Hokkaido (even if I'm on an australian passport), or do i need to arrange this externally?

also, what sort of cost am I looking at (return)

Yup, Airdo is the way to go. I've got a return flight coming in at 18,500Â¥. Their website is completely Japanese but if you check there is an English contact phone number. If you can order your ticket 28 days in advance you can get the Airdo Special ticket which is about 9,800Â¥ one way. JAL is the next cheapest followed by ANA (both of which have good English websites for their domestic flights). Flying out of Haneda is cheaper than Narita. Have fun!!

Just booked some for Feb - quite heavily booked - $373 Aussie Dollars each return. (For the boy - I am not heading back up in Feb wink )

Why not hit up Hakuba if you are just doing a quickie side trip?

+ 1 for welcome to Japan fares.

If flying from OZ on Qantas you get the oneworld Yokoso fare and if Jetstar then you have to use the welcome to Japan fare. Most travel agents are not aware of them so link to JAL site.

ANA also have one that I think is called visit to japan fare that is 13,650 yen
