We are driving to Owarai(Ibaraki) and catching the overnight ferry to Tomakomai. It's the only way to go as far as I'm concerned. Driving the Tohoku to Aomori is a brutal (boring) drive. The ferry is 19 hours. Leaves in the early evening and gets in at around noon. We've done it a few times now and we used to take the ferry to Hokkaido all the time when I was living up in Sendai. Niseko had almost 2 meters actual snowpack - settled - in the village before the end of the year. Niigata had probably even more.
