Thundercat 60
Hey TB, I spend a lot of time in Myoko and Akakura Onsen (Akakan) is my favourite place. The last time I went to Seki Onsen it was terrible terrible terrible (terrible!). The area is tiny and its only worth going if they've just got a dump of fresh snow. Give Akakura a go. You'll find lots of off-piste/side-piste if you stick around the top of the mountain. Particularly the Olympic and Challenge areas. You can also hike to the top rather easily... enjoy! Tubby Beaver 209
nice one, will have to give it a go this year. I always forget what Akakura is the good one!!
stemik 14
Suginohara - has some nice trees runs from the top. great evenly placed silver birch trees.
Tubby Beaver 209
I loved it when I was there, we stayed high for most of the time, the 2nd day they opened the very top lift mid morning after about a metre overnight and it was the best snow I have ever seen
SKI 15
If I remember right TB, you would have been all dokidoki about the snow pretty much anywhere that weekend you went.... Don't get me wrong, I like the place.
RobBright 35
In regards to Myoko, how are transfers like to and from the nearest station?
Thundercat 60
From Nagano station its less than an hour by local train. From Myoko station to Akakan or Akakura Onsen its about a 5-10 min taxi... I know there is an hourly shuttle bus between Onsen, Akakan, Ikenotaira and Suginohara which might stop at the station. If you are planning on staying there over night pretty much all of the accommodation will pick you up at the station and most will shuttle you to resorts.
RobBright 35
Cheers will check it out later. Just picked up some large Burton freestyle bindings for the princely sum of 5000yen Happy daysî«…

Thundercat 60
ikenotaira is alright, not so big, not so crowded. good for a day after some fresh snow...
RobBright 35
On occasions, yes.
TheOriginalMyoko 0
Ikenotaira is worth a visit to check it out and a couple of areas that I particularly like myself. But it's probably the one that I go to least. I'd say that people visiting Myoko should give all the main ones on the mountain a shufty.

Yep, the bus does stop at the train station (the stop is just on right as you exit the station). It took us to the Suginohara car park - where the hotel owner picked us up - in a snow-cat ! (the accom was half-way up the mtn)
SKI 15
Yes and it is less than 10 minutes from the station.
