ACHILLES BY CAROL ANN DUFFY

Myth's river - where his mother dipped him, fished him, a slippery golden boy flowed on, his name on its lips.

Without him, it was prophesied, they would not take Troy.

Women hid him, concealed him in girls' sarongs; days of sweetmeats, spices, silver songs...

But when Odysseus came, with an athlete's build, a sword and a shield, he followed him to the battlefield, the crowd's roar,

And it was sport, not war, his charmed foot on the ball...

But then his heel, his heel, his heel...

Chelsea are planning a move for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres in the summer transfer window, according to reports. <-- doh

Although owner Roman Abramovich is not planning wholesale changes to the Chelsea squad, despite their dramatic failure in the Champions League, the Russian has pinpointed several key positions that need strengthening.

Chelsea will bid for at least three established stars this summer, with Franck Ribery, Sergio Agüero and Torres topping the wanted list.

Sporting director Frank Arnesen is keen to buy and stamp his own mark on the squad, and there are funds available, with reports suggesting Carlo Ancelotti could be handed a £100 million war chest.

Ricardo Carvalho, Deco, Paulo Ferreira and Juliano Belletti are all likely to be sold to free up funds, thereby also allowing some of the club's younger players, such as Gael Kakuta and Daniel Sturridge, to gain more first-team opportunities.

Following the defeat to Inter, Abramovich entered the Chelsea dressing room after the final whistle, but it has been claimed there was no finger pointing, arguing or complaining.

"He (Abramovich) didn't speak," said winger Florent Malouda. "Everyone was quiet in the dressing room because we were really disappointed.

"He came in because when we lose we lose together. You don't have to blame anyone in particular, we lost together. Now we have to raise it and we will analyse the way we played and then win together."

Defeat came with the admission that Chelsea resorted to hitting long balls to Drogba, with Malouda adding: "We didn't use our strengths and sometimes we played too many long balls. It was strange and we didn't seem to handle it and to find a way to keep the intensity high."

Michael Ballack bluntly described Chelsea as having "no answer" to Inter.

"To play against this team, they were defensively so strong and in every duel they were unbelievable, clever and hard," said the Germany midfielder.

"Normally you find an answer because we are also a physical team but we were not good on the night and were disappointed."
