C'mon!

GOOGLE has become a word in common usage, more than just a noun it has taken on other forms.

Just google it.

Google is your friend.

I am all googled out...

...of course there are thousands more...

It has not only become commonplace in the english language, but there are signs for it in sign language now - thats when you know it is in common usage!

It would take something SPECTACULAR to uproot the firm hold google has on the current user market.

Bing looks crap.

I should probably test it more deeply (seeing as I am/was a web specialist), but from the few test searches I did the logic behind its 'engine' seems to little more than this:

"If the search phrase is in the domain name, rank that domain near the top."

e.g.

Search for "Taj Mahal" and tajmahal.com is in top 3.

Search for "japan hotel" and japanhotel.net and japan-hotel.com are up the top.

etc.

Did you know that Google search engine is basically run by hundreds of thousands of low end PCs?

Interesting, I've been parallel searching most of my searches today and Bing has had the edge, although there isn't much in it. (It's called procrastination)

I'd love Bing to at least appear to be the real deal, I want to see what Google will do to defend it's position! stir

Just a thought...

Does this serve to re-think about the choice of search engines? In the beginning I used to do Meta-search but one day a friend said "google it" and I got into a habit of that.

Is the choice of search engines just a matter of habit? or because everyone uses that?

I don't wanna hijack but does anyone use other than google here?

Only very rarely. I have used yahoo, and found it to be lacking. I used to use ANZWERS because it could be localised to show only Australian results, but Google now has that capability too.

I think Google came to be ubiquitous because it JUST WORKS! There is very little that MS does that works so well so soon after release (slight non-MS bias there).

Google invests heavily in getting itself 'embedded' in applications.

For example, Firefox is basically funded by Google in return for being the default search engine. Of course they cannot do that with IE because IE is made by M$ who want to push Bing. So Google has a strong strong incentive to reduce IE market share in order to keep MS away from the lucrative search engine paid ads market share.

But Google is much more than a search engine and has been for many years. It does SaaS (software as a service), e.g. gmail, gmaps, gCalendar, etc etc etc. They know everything that users are doing online and use that data to invest in new areas or to increase value to advertisers.

I don't get the squared thing. WTF is it supposed to do other than give a couple of results with some other (seemingly useless) stuff.

Me, I think I'll stick to Google proper!
