A Californian woman who gave birth to octuplets earlier this week already has six children, US media has reported.

The eight babies were delivered nine weeks early by Caesarean section in a hospital near Los Angeles on Monday.

The mother has not been named, but US media is quoting family members as saying she already has six other children, including twins.

Doctors say the eight babies are making good progress and are expected to stay in hospital for several more weeks.

The story gets better:

It began as a feel-good story designed to lift America’s spirits during another week of grim economic news.

But last night increasingly difficult questions were being asked about the birth on Monday of healthy octuplets – only the second known case in US medical history – after it emerged that the mother may have undergone fertility treatment, even though she already had six children.

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment guidelines produced by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine say that a woman under 35 should have no more than two embryos implanted at a time. The organisation said last night that it had started an investigation into the case.

Patients must also typically undergo a thorough evaluation before qualifying for IVF treatment.

Unless there are monozygotic twins in that bunch (identicals) then there were at least 8 viable embryo's implanted into this woman. A woman who already has 6 children.

She is apparently quite young lives with her parents and hubby is back off to Iraq! According to reports I have read.

Would not happen in Aus.

There are strict guidelines as to WHO qualifies for IVF and you will not get it on a whim! And there are strict guidelines for numbers to be implanted as well.

However I believe there are some dodgy fertility clinics in the US who routinely implant higher numbers of embryos so that thier 'success rates' are higher. In general, depsite an implantation of 8 embryos the likelyhood of a pregnancy with all 8 fetuses is low - but there are always exceptions - as these guys found out.

I feel sad for the women with no kids in more ethical locales who have been refused treatment for one reason or another when they see this story - must make them real mad!
