Funny how we talk about "gaijin" as being the same as us. It's like a fixed meaning word now isn't it, Japanese overseas still call Westerners "gaijin". Always makes me laugh that.

I don't see it as a put-down label TBH. I use it to describe any foreigner including myself living in Japan. When I travelled I would also refer to people as foreigners, even although it was actually me who was the foreigner at that time.
