BagOfCrisps 24
Coz you can now... Quote: Open water now stretches all the way round the Arctic, making it possible for the first time in human history to circumnavigate the North Pole, The Independent on Sunday can reveal. New satellite images, taken only two days ago, show that melting ice last week opened up both the fabled North-west and North-east passages, in the most important geographical landmark to date to signal the unexpectedly rapid progress of global warming. Last night Professor Mark Serreze, a sea ice specialist at the official US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), hailed the publication of the images – on an obscure website by scientists at the University of Bremen, Germany – as "a historic event", and said that it provided further evidence that the Arctic icecap may now have entered a "death spiral". Some scientists predict that it could vanish altogether in summer within five years, a process that would, in itself, greatly accelerate. But Sarah Palin, John McCain's new running mate, holds that the scientific consensus that global warming is melting Arctic ice is unreliable. (Palin was unavailable for comment, as she was busy eating moose-burgers).

bobby12 0
when does it get to the point that people start to do somethig about it? what does it take? 2 hurricane katrinas in the space of a few years? seems like we need more than that to do something. I think the majority of people agree that something should be done, but I for one am doing absolutely nothing about it.
why? 0
Send ice?
kokodoko 67
I put a sticker on my car that says CO2 with an arrow pointing to my exhaust.. it may help to decrease global warming..

Why not? Sounds like you have some internal dialogue going on there. If you feel the need to do something - do it - whatever it is - you will feel better. Maybe it wont turn back the clock on the melting ice caps, but it will make you feel a little less helpless.
Mantas 3
I think a lot of people feel the same as Bobby12. You just feel so helpless. A lot of people are waiting for some kind of leadership.
HelperElfMissy 42
Leadership is great Mantas, and I am sure we as a Global People need it. But what about personal accountability and personal comfort with what you are doing? I will admit - I am no big Greenie - but I am making small changes every day and if something doesn't sit well with me - I change it. If everyone throws thier hands up in the air and says "Nothing I can do will make any difference" then they are right - because they will do nothing.
Tubby Beaver 209
so basically you are just relieving some guilt. I think for a positive change to this problem it has to be done at the Industrial level, I don't see how little changes made by people will have a significant effect on anything except to make them feel less guilty about the pleasures they enjoy
Mantas 3
That's right TB. If Australia disappeared off the map tomorrow, the global CO2 deficit we created for the year would be picked up by China in weeks. That's not to say I don't do what I can to help. The energy wastage at industrial level is massive and makes domestic energy use look irrelevant. You have to see the numbers to fully understand.
