mina2 6
Can any of you guys in that area of Niigata clear something up for me? Minamiuonuma is a city now, right? What happened to Minamiuonunma-gun? Does that still exist? Thanks!
muikabochi 208
Hi there Minamiuonuma-gun used to include: Yuzawa Shiozawa Muikamachi Urasa/Yamata. Shiozawa, Muikamachi and Ursasa are now together (in name) as Minamiuonuma-shi (city). Minamiuonuma-gun does actually still exist, but the only place that uses it in addresses is Yuzawa-machi (town), which seems a bit odd. But there you go.
mina2 6
Ahh, get it now... thanks mate!
SirGuy 0
OK off topic but is shi the word for city? What is gun the word for?
muikabochi 208
Yes shi is city. (Though it is still hard to think of Minamiuonuma as a city as it is made up of 4 small towns with no real centre). machi is town gun I'm not sure how that is translated like county (though smaller than county back in England). SKI 15
I thought Yuzawa was going to join in the -shi fun - they opted out of joining in? I suppose they are richer than the rest so wouldn't want to share...
muikabochi 208
Something like that. It was part of the plans I believe, but they decided not to join in the Minamiuonuma-shi funfest.
grungy-gonads 54
I would think Yuzawa is (was... though probably still is) much richer than the towns to the north. Doesn't want to share!
