Both sides agree on tough new fracking standards

No need to use expletives, sheesh.

Associated Press= PITTSBURGH (AP) — Some of the nation's biggest oil and gas companies have made peace with environmentalists, agreeing to a voluntary set of tough new standards for fracking in the Northeast that could lead to a major expansion of drilling.

When they inject high pressure water jets into gas hydrates in the earth to release gas from the sands.......or something along those lines.

Its quite controversial, with the gas companies saying its safe and the environmentalists saying its not. Theres a high possibility of contamination of groundwater supplies with the run off.....rumours of towns in the US turning on their taps and flames of methane shooting out.....dunno how true they are. Also there is some evidence to suggest that the energy gained isn't worth the effort as it costs so much to get....again, dunno how true as there is hyperbole on both sides and I a just a dumb snowboarder

Fracking = hydraulic fracturing, usually of coal seams that are not economic to mine for coal because of the composition, so they frack them and extract the gas (mainly methane) for use as fuel.

BIG issue around here, as the liquids they use for the fracturing are highly toxic, have managed to pollute major streams with the "production" water (the water that comes out of the well with the gas) and have no way of guaranteeing that the gas released will not escape their collection system and infiltrate the other rock strata, sometimes escaping to the surface as "fugitive" emissions, polluting surface water, bores and the air above.

Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases, and the Coal Seam Gas companies have ZERO data on the extent of fugitive emissions, because they have not carried out any background testing to see what the "original" emission status was before fracking begins - therefore they can claim that the fugitive emissions are "normal" and there's very little evidence to dispute this.

Government has got to get involved and MAKE these companies actually prove their claims with decent science BEFORE they start stuffing around with the fracking game. At least, background measurements of all variables (emissions, water table depths, water quality to name a few) MUST be carried out before any permission to explore is given, but the State governments here are wedded to the royalties the miners pay them, and so are loath to force any conditions on them.

@Tubby - snowboarder you may be, but I somehow doubt the "dumb" bit!

Authorities in the US state of Ohio have issued an "indictment" against Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog famed for predicting spring's arrival, after he got it wrong this year.

The groundhog forecast an early spring when he did not see his shadow as he emerged from hibernation on 2 February.

But tongue-in-cheek prosecutors in Ohio's Butler County accuse the rodent of deliberately misleading the public.

They say such a felony should be punished by death.

"Punxsutawney Phil did purposely, and with prior calculation and design, cause the people to believe that spring would come early," wrote Mike Gmoser, Butler County prosecutor, in an official-looking paper.

A fishmonger in southern China was certainly left shellshocked as he gutted a squid on his market stall only to discover a live bomb inside.

The device, which was eight inches long, had been eaten by the squid, which itself measured more than three feet.

The fishmonger, who only gave his name Mr Huang, spoke of his consternation to the local Guangzhou Daily newspaper. He said that his knife hit the metal of the bomb whilst he was already gutting the fish.

“This sort of squid lives close to the shore and normally makes a meal of small fish and prawns,” he explained. “Perhaps he thought the bomb was his favourite food and gulped it down. He certainly had a big belly when he was caught.”

Police attended the scene quickly and removed the bomb to carry out a controlled explosion. From the ageing of the bomb, with its rusty exterior, forces were shocked it hadn’t already detonated.

The explosive is thought to have weighed around three pounds.

Female octopuses go to extra lengths when stretching their arms to reach food, a study has found.

Scientists in Italy measured octopuses' arm extensions as they reached up a tube towards tasty bait.

They found for the first time that octopuses' arm elongation ability differed depending on their sex and size.
