While investigators struggle to piece together what happened when model and fashion editor Lauren Scruggs was severely injured after accidentally walking into the propeller of a small plane, one focus will be the pilot of the aircraft, who has been identified as a friend of her and her family.

Kurt Richmond of Frisco, Texas, was the pilot who flew Scruggs above Dallas to view Christmas lights on Saturday night prior to the accident. Although Richmond has not answered repeated requests for an interview, ABC News has learned that the Scruggs family does not blame Richmond for the accident that severed Lauren's hand and sliced the left side of her face and shoulder. At this point it is still unclear whether she will lose her left eye.

Lauren's parents Cheryl and Jeff Scruggs said that they believe the 23-year-old walked back toward Richmond's plane at the private airport north of Dallas to say a final thank you, perhaps as he was preparing to take off again.

While investigators look into the events leading up to the tragic accident, many are speculating as to why the propeller was left running in the first place. ABC News Aviation Consultant John Nance says that most of the time pilots would never let a passenger in or out with the engine and the propeller running.

"The pilot of a bird like an Aviat Husky is going to in almost all cases shut the engine down completely and have the propeller stop, which happens almost immediately as soon as you shut it down," Nance said. "Because we know the danger of having a human being anywhere close to a twirling prop."

Nance agrees that she may not have known that she was in the vicinity of the spinning propeller when she was struck, adding that the engine on a small airplane makes far more noise than the propeller does, and she would need to be acutely aware of the physiology of the airplane to be able to detect it.

"It is highly probable that Lauren was coming back and the pilot did not know that she was in the vicinity … it would be one of your worst nightmares to see somebody looming up out of the darkness towards a propeller that's running," Nance said.

Lauren underwent several surgeries over the weekend and is now in stable condition at Dallas' Parkland Hospital. The extent of her brain injury is still not known, family spokesperson Janee Harrell told ABCNews.com.

She is once again communicating -- when asked her name she said 'Lauren' and when she saw her parents she said "I love you."

"We're just praying that, her left eye will regain its sight. It's just going to be a long journey, a long recovery," Jeff Scruggs told ABC News.

Lauren, who started a fashion website called Lolo and also worked in the wardrobe department of the TV show "Gossip Girl," was not drinking at the time of the accident, according to her parents.

quite tragic......but how the f### did she not hear the propeller and engine going??

Alcohol-induced hangovers will be a thing of the past thanks to a new over-the-counter remedy say U.S. scientists.

A single dose of Blowfish can eradicate all symptoms sparked by a night of heavy drinking, such as nausea, vomiting and fatigue, in just 15 minutes.

Hailed as a miracle cure by its maker, the pill - which contains 500 milligrams of aspirin, 60 milligrams of caffeine and an antacid to soothe upset stomachs - is already available online.

Surfer attacked by shark at Angourie, north coast of NSW. It seems it was a Bronze Whaler.

A Yamba surfer is feeling lucky a shark only took a bite out of his board today.

Stephen King, 51, was attacked by what he believes was a whaler shark while surfing at Angourie, near Yamba on NSW's far north coast, about 6am this morning.

"Just as I was taking off, jumping up, there was this bang from the side and I was cartwheeling through the air and it was just thrashing beside me," Mr King told Nine News.

He reckons he almost lost a leg in the attack but only received a couple of puncture wounds for which he got a tetanus shot.

"I'm probably the luckiest guy on two legs at the moment," he said. "Unbelievable."

Department of Primary Industries spokesman Vic Peddermors said attacks were more common at the start of summer.

"This is the time of year that a lot of the potentially dangerous shares are in our coastal waters," he said.

"We've got to be realistic. This is their territory and we're just the visitors."

A fake doctor injected a man's penis with silicone, killing him, police said Friday.

Justin Street visited Kasia Rivera, 34, at her home in New Jersey for the penis enhancement proceedure on May 5, prosecutors say.

But just a day after attending the so-called 'pumping-party' the 22-year-old was dead.

Street suffered a clot to the lungs and died. A medical examiner determined he died of a silicone embolism.

His death was ruled a homicide following an investigation and Rivera has now been charged with manslaughter.

She also faces charges involving the unauthorised practice of medicine. She was arrested Friday and is being held on $75,000 bail.

Silicon injections are increasingly used to enlarge body parts, such as the buttocks.

The only cosmetic use for non-encapsulated medical silicone approved by the FDA is Botox, for use around the eyes.

But blackmarket illegal use by untrained practitioners continues as a quick-fix budget alternative to cosmetic surgery. Doctors say the slow economy has also fuelled the trade.

While side effects are thought to be relatively rare, in some cases silicone will migrate through the bloodstream, resulting in a potentially fatal clot in the heart or brain or lungs.

Ouch.

Toronto's so-called gay penguins, Buddy and Pedro, have officially split, say zoo keepers, after one of them found a female mate.

They were separated last month by zoo officials who said they needed to reproduce because African penguins are an endangered species.

Buddy has now paired with a female, but Pedro has yet to get lucky, though it is not said to be for lack of trying.

Buddy and Pedro shared a nest for about one year after arriving at the zoo.

Videos of the pair became hugely popular on the internet.

Tom Mason, Toronto Zoo's curator of birds and invertebrates, told a news conference on Monday that less than three days after Buddy and Pedro's "bromance" was ended, the former successfully paired with a female, Farai, on 19 November.

Pedro has been chasing another female, Thandiwey, for several weeks, although she has so far shown little interest.

Mr Mason said Buddy and Pedro's relationship had been social, not sexual, and that both would probably end up settling with females.

Buddy, 21, had a female partner for a decade and produced chicks.

But Pedro, 10, has yet to produce any offspring.
