SNOWJAPAN.COM DESIGN COMPETITION

OK we’ve been talking about this for a while, but now it is actually going to happen.

Fancy coming up with a cool design that might be used on an “official” (and very expensive*) SnowJapan.Com sticker and/or other possible merchandise? We might even use it on the site somewhere...

(Only kidding about the very expensive bit. Probably.)

Well now’s your chance.

One thing we should say up front - you don’t have to be a trained graphic designer to win. And you can send in as many designs as you want as there is no “per person” limit. (Send in 10 different designs if you want.)

We’re looking for the best idea, not the best designer. And when we say "We're", we don't mean the people who run the website, we mean everyone using the Forums......yes, the winner will be decided on by users of the SJ Forums. \:\) (See below for details on how the winner will be decided.) What's important is that people like it.

The winning design might be something simple, but definitely something that would look great on a sticker, something you’d be proud to wear, something you’d want to show people. We’re not exactly sure. That’s where you lot come in.

----------------------------------

THE GUIDELINES

The only guideline for design is we ask that “SnowJapan.Com” and maybe also the letters “SJ” are incorporated into the design somewhere.

And also of course that it’s a great design that fellow SnowJapan members would be more than happy to brand themselves with!

Design Specs:

The design will ultimately need to be submitted in one of the formats below. If you can, please make your designs using these guidelines. However, at this stage we would prefer to accept designs as basic jpg/gif files rather than being sent huge source files (keep those for later!)

The specs of the FINAL DESIGN will need to be as follows:

--- 300dpi- 600dpi;

--- size: 4in x 4in OR 3in x 10in;

--- Clear background;

--- CMYK;

--- 4 colors max.;

--- no photos.

Acceptable Software Applications (all versions of):

--- Adobe Photoshop; Adobe Illustrator; Macromedia Freehand

Acceptable File Formats:

--- TIFF, EPS, JPEG, PSD (300 - 600 dpi)

--- Both Mac and PC formats are acceptable.

However, at this stage of the process, please send the design on to us as a clear high quality jpg/gif file (rather than sending on huge source files)!

----------------------------------

HOW TO ENTER:

That’s really simple.

Please send us your design to this email address design@snowjapan.com.

We’ll let you know that we have received it.

Please try not to send us huge great big massive source files - a large, clear jpg/gif will be sufficient at this stage.

----------------------------------

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES:

Please send in your designs by 14th May 2005.

(If this deadline date causes rioting in the streets, this may change - it depends on how things go and any feedback we get.... but we will let you know in advance if we do plan to change it. Do let us know if you have any strong objections and we might listen to you ;\) )

----------------------------------

SO HOW WILL THE WINNER BE DECIDED?

There will be 2 excite steps:

STEP 1)

First of all, we will create a page on the site that displays all of the designs that have been submitted (and approved by us). We’ll then ask people (ie YOU!) to vote for your favorite three designs in order of preference.

STEP 2)

The 3 designs with the most votes in the first stage will go on to the GRAND FINAL. Well, hopefully it will be grand anyway. That will be held on the SJ FORUMS (ie HERE!) – all forum members will be able to vote on a Poll. The design with the most votes will be the winner!

----------------------------------

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMERS AND OTHER NECESSARY STUFF:

1

All submitted designs should be original in nature.

2

Any designs similar to any other copyrighted images will not be accepted.

3

All entrants understand that their designs may be used by SnowJapan.Com on stickers or other merchandise and maybe even on the website, as SnowJapan.Com sees fit. As such the winning entrant understands that by entering the above mentioned competition waives all copyright ownership. Thus mentioned copyright ownership and the selected design will become property of SnowJapan.Com. The prize is not monetary - it’s the immense pride in your design being used and the incredible popularity it will bring you! (You'll also no doubt get a bunch of freebies though).

4

We reserve the right to change any of the above details, close down the site, or do anything else we want (especially if we get people moaning). ;\)

5

If all the designs are embarrassingly rubbish, there won't be a winner! \:D

----------------------------------

GOOD LUCK! We're hoping to see some really great designs. Let's Designing! \:D

1. What's 'CMYK'? confused.gif

2. 30th April isn't that far off. \:\( I.e. if you want to avoid 'embarrassing rubbish' a bit more time would be good - say Monday 16th May which allows about one month for people to polish up an idea.

Thanks for getting the ball well-'n-truly rolling. Good luck all.

I'm not very technical so I don't know about the CXIRT of whatever. ;\) Something to do with color. Anyone?

Anyway, we have already had a few mails coming in about the date and so we may well change that deadline to after Golden Week. What do others think?

Thanks

I realise that this is in direct violation of rule number one "All submitted designs should be original in nature." but please be sure to include the picture below as an option on the voting form. Why re-invent the wheel.

CMYK stands for Cyan Magenda Yellow colour format. There is also RGB which is the Red Green Blue format. I think that CMYK is the one widely used by graphic designers end staff.

One familiar with Photoshop, Corel e.t.c. then will probably know.

Tsonda you are right, CMYK is the colour setup prefered for printing (although not always). As O11 mentioned if your using a design program it will ask you which colour preference you would like, just choose CMYK.

The Snow Kanji in the O sounds good, but in order to really see you need a very big O.

I agree with Toque. Just use the current SJ logo. Forget ".com". That is what was used during the internet bubble.

Or stick it somewhere small (non-detectional) in the bottom.

Hi there, thanks for the entries so far.

We've been asked to extend the deadline for a few more days. We'll do that, for the last time - so the final final deadline will be

FRIDAY 20th MAY 2005

Please send any entries in by that date at the latest. There haven't been that many entries so do be shy - if you have an idea, get a design done and send it in.

Thanks.
