Great comment from Helen Clark, NZ prime minister.

"Sir Ed was not one to bask idly in celebrity. He drew on his international prestige to highlight issues and values which he held dear. His enduring commitment to and respect for the Sherpa people reflects the best of what we as New Zealanders can contribute, from our small developed nation helping another less privileged one."

Legendary Kiwi adventurer died today at 88.

No-one in this forum knew mountains like this dude

RIP mate.

The unassuming New Zealand beekeeper who conquered Mount Everest to win renown as one of the 20th century's greatest adventurers, died Friday. Sir Edmund Hilary was 88.

The lanky New Zealander devoted much of his life to aiding the mountain people of Nepal and took his fame in stride, preferring to be called Ed and considering himself an "ordinary person with ordinary qualities."

sport - golfer Michael Campbell.

Rugby - Dan Carter

AJ Hackett is well known to very few people in the world.

Russell Crowe is Australian, even he sayes so.

Plenty of famous deceased New Zealanders. Sir Ed is in some pretty esteemed company in that list.

Seeing we're on the subject of national identity and this is a snow sports site, here's one for you. There's a g Aussie snowboarder who happens to be born in Kiwi and lives in Auckland. His sister is currently skiing in Hakuba for the season.
