Nat'l Pension Ins. Benefit Amt for Foreigners leaving Jp.

Recommended Posts

I never had it explained to me. I had only heard a thousand variations of how our pensions get reimbursed to us after we leave Japan. Finally, I found a link-

I can only assume there are others here that have been as frustrated as I in seeking answers to tax refunds after returning to their native countries. It's quite the handy 11 page PDF.

Are you a US citizen samurai? You should check whether your country has a reciprocal agreement on pensions - I am from the UK, and any contributions I have made will be counted as contributions to the UK pension scheme if/when I go back. It's actually a pretty neat arrangement. I know that there are other countries that have it, but I couldn't tell you which ones off the top of my head.

Ger- I don't know if/when I'm going back. I'm developing a project now that won't require me to be in any one place. November is my goal to be out of my current school, though, and will open opportunities to utilize that lump sum elsewhere. (I'd rather be in charge of my pension.)

KOM- I believe the US does have a reciprical agreement and that is a nice system.

This is pertinent for me too, in 18 months I may hand in my gaijin card and try to get tax refund. I did that after 3 yrs on JET and it was fairly smooth, just took time and a j-friend. Being on JET they made sure it was a simple as possible for us with sub-50 IQs. \:D

Just looked into this reciprocal thing with UK, its not clear to me how it affects me. If you read it, it explains what happens if you work for a company and it sends you to Japan (or vice versa) but it doesn't mention if you just go to Japan and find a job there.
