kkk 7
From a conversation in the chat box. Which prefectures can you say are "in the Japan Alps"? I thought it would be Toyama / Nagano / Yamanashi but talk of Gunma appeared and confused me. Is there a defined area as such? Anyone in the know do tell!

soubriquet 0
Looks like I'm wrong.
tsondaboy 0
The northern Alps are between Nagano/Toyama/Gifu pref. and the southern Alps are between Nagano/Yamanashi/Shizuoka pref.
HighlyTrainedNovaTeacher 2
Isn't that N > S line right where that big earthquake fault goes too?
tsondaboy 0
Exactly HTNT!
soubriquet 0
Thanks tsonda. That was the map I was looking for. That fault is a suture where N and S Honshu have been joined. It is not active in a relative sense.
muikabochi 208
It's (relatively) not that far from where I am and so it will surely go off while I am here.
Fattwins 0
The south alps tend to have less snow but I think on average they are higher.
2pints-mate 0
tsondaboy, is this an "official" area, if you know what I mean?
tsondaboy 0
What do you mean by official area?
2pints-mate 0
Sorry i didn't ask it well. Is the Japan Alps a defined area that everyone knows? Can someone in for example Gunma bullshit that they are "in the Japan Alps" and get away with it, or would Japanese just laugh at them.
Tubby Beaver 209
why? has somebody been pulling yer chain 2pints?
2pints-mate 0
No, just interesting! (And I want to know the answer!)
tsondaboy 0
If you go down to Shibuya and start asking the young gyaru were are the Japanese alps you won’t have problem convincing them that they are part of Okinawa...
happyhappy 0
Seriously, I'd like to know too!
tsondaboy 0
More about the Alps here: http://www.snowjapanforums.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/85885/fpart/1 The J-Alps are well defined, and you expect more or less someone that has finished high school in Japan to be able to locate them on a map. LadyMoonlight 0
That will be the Tanigawa range won't it? Interesting about the Alps I wasn't aware of the boundaries
big-will 7
Yes. Nice area. I am going to test some of my colleagues on this Japan Alps question and see what the results are.
tsondaboy 0
PS, Norikura volcano is a disputed area even among scholars. Some consider it part of the Northern Alps, some classify it as Central Alps and others do not consider it part of the Alps at all. If you want to have a small trivia about the Alps, you can ask your colleagues which is the second highest mountain in Japan after Mt Fuji.

frannyo 2
Are there a few Norikuras? One in south Nagano and the other in the Hakuba area? I'm sure I heard about Norikura in Hakuba
