From a conversation in the chat box.

Which prefectures can you say are "in the Japan Alps"?

I thought it would be Toyama / Nagano / Yamanashi but talk of Gunma appeared and confused me. Is there a defined area as such?

Anyone in the know do tell!

Can someone in for example Gunma bullshit that they are "in the Japan Alps" and get away with it, or would Japanese just laugh at them.

PS, Norikura volcano is a disputed area even among scholars. Some consider it part of the Northern Alps, some classify it as Central Alps and others do not consider it part of the Alps at all.

If you want to have a small trivia about the Alps, you can ask your colleagues which is the second highest mountain in Japan after Mt Fuji. ;\)
