Another big earthquake in Niigata. (It's not fair).

Really! So what constitutes the difference between a landslide and an avalanche? is there some sort of quantifying parameters that tells you whether a slide is deemed a landslide or an avalanche?

I wonder if the SJ mailbox survived the earthquake. May be a good opportunity to do something about it ;-)

lol.gif What's wrong with it?!

More than 95% of our clients live outside the area - meaning hardly anyone other than the postman visits the office - and we have a fair few things that seem more important than letter boxes and signs, but you can come and volunteer to do it up for us though if you want ;\)

Anyway there's a chance we might not be there much longer anyway.

A landslide is essentially the initial phase of an avalanche. Avalanches are physically quite complex things. Given time they typically evolve from slides to grain flows, then on to liquified and finally turbidity flows.

I'm sorry I didn't forecast this one. Perhaps because it was under the sea. But I have informed my mum and a few friends that THERE WILL BE AN EARTHQUAKE OF MAGNITUDE 3 OR ABOVE BETWEEN NOW AND 31ST OCTOBER 2007 SOMEWHERE BETWEEN HOKKAIDO AND OKINAWA. I'm quite confident of this one and so please prepare as necessary.

Apart from any physical damage, it really must be mentally very tiring for Niigata folk to go through that again. It really sucks.

G-G, how do you predict quakes? Are you taking the piss? I have obviously missed you saying before, but if you are serious, thats a rather vague prediction. Middle of the road earthquake to hit somewhere on the Japanese islands (high probability). Stevie Wonder could probably see that coming!!

There are only 3 things that turns Tsonaboy on...porn, techno, and Earthquakes (not neccessarily in that order) - what a great guy!

I haven't had time to do enough research to join the conversation - a bit distracted - but sounds like an interesting one.

My friend lived in Kashiwazaki until last month. I haven't spoken to them since the earthquake but I would expect they are feeling a mix of lucky for themselves and sadness for friends right now.

Probably right under me in Muikamachi. There has been talk of the discovery of the Muikamachi dansou. That makes me feel safe.

I have only felt 4 aftershocks from this earthquake in total, compared with probably 50 times that in the one three years ago. A good thing.
