Oyuki kigan 0
For all of you that like your pain in the form of wood, urethane, and pavement. Anyways, last weekend AK, a couple of his friends, and a friend of mine from Yokohama (who we will call "Holmes")got together and cruised over into Gunma for a little sk8 trip. We got into Annaka in the afternoon to check out the infamous "Death Bowl". Its about 10 feet high, with about a foot and a half of vert (over-vert?), and a slightly rough texture. We all kinda milled around it, mostly dropping in through the Channel and turning a little, because dropping in was looking so frickin scary. Some local kid showed up with a seriously pigeon-toed stance and tiny wheels dropped in, and started grinding the coping a little. I talked to him later, and it turns out that he was only 18, and had only been sk8ing for 4 years! i don't get it... After being scared away (but unharmed) we retreated to the street course where we all enjoyed the hot weather and AK took some photos and video. i had a workout on my new board, the Mandecktm . Some local guys were there, including this older Brazilian guy (who had a 8 or 9 year old daughter) who was killing kids an a game of SKATE. After some ice cream and talking about girls (well, mostly us eating ice cream listening to AK talk about girls) we packed it in to hit spot # 2, the Maebashi Indoor park, while AKs friend departed to hunt japanese reggae girls at a concert that was happening in north Gunma that evening. Trickstar in Maebashi had a great indoor park, but it recently underwent some rennovations, and the layout changed a fair bit. It lost a fair bit of its flow, and i felt bad that AK and Holmes had to pay almost 2000 to ride it. I had fun though almost crashing into the lighting some dudes had set up so they could film their friends, and AK had fun getting it all on video. http://www.necroware.org/Media/Media/46641a88e4e1fIMG_2809.jpg After taking some painkillers for his side, AK got over his fear of metal mini ramps and warmed up on the baby ramp (2 feet high?) before taking it to the 4 foot. Holmes pretty much slayed everything his wheels touched. after a hot, sweat session, we all spooned in the nearby turkish bath went to Cocos for cheap eats, talked about girls, listened to AK and Holmes recited 2/3s of Zoolander, and headed home to Nagano. But these guys are sk8 fiends, and on the way back we stopped at 2 different parking lots with concrete embankments so that they could ride a little more. Got home at 1ish, and crashed. Next day, 3 more local parks were skated (Saku, Asahina, and Komoro) but we were all pretty much dragging our feet when we pushed at the end. Thanks for the good times, boys. And if AK ever reads this, he might post some pics. So lets hear it, sk8 stories, spots, park reviews, vicious rumors, whatever. And oh yeah, AK pushes Mongo!

soubriquet 0
Nice graffiti. What other anti-social activities are compulsory to be a boarding doooood?
thursday 1
pants that you can store your boards inside.
soubriquet 0
Don't come to Oishida. We don't want you boarding vandals here.
Tubby Beaver 209
I tried to skateboard last year. At my work I was taking a group of 1st year high school kids every friday as a reward. Thought that I'd let the (Scottish) Government pay me to learn skateboarding. I thought since I could Snowboard that skateboardigng would come naturally. How wrong I was!!!!!!!! That was the most painful time of my life, I ditched the skateboard pretty soon in favour of a BMX and just as I was able to drop into the ramp, I fell off and seriously hurt my ankle...that was it, **** that shite! There's no teaching this dog any new tricks!
Oyuki kigan 0
Sk8ing is hard, which is why it will never be as popular as nowboarding. as for the grafitti, i assure you, i can paint a better penis than that. I don't think that particular artwork was skater-related. I prefer stencils myself. and spook, some great sk8 videos are The DC video Mouse Black Label Daewon Versus Rodney 1, 2, and
spook 0
damn right skating is hard. i really wanted to get half decent at skating, but i'm a total kook and i don't want to hurt myself. after losing half the skin off my back, and seeig a mate break his ankle, i decided it wasn't worth it. i wish i could do it, but it ain't worth the pain in my books. i will check out those vids oyuki. cheers for that. rodney mullen is a technical wizard. he might do lots of little tricks, but they are crazy and they blow my mind. i also like the DC stunts. oh yeah... for what it's worth i like graf. tagging is shite, but graffiti has it's place. Tubby Beaver 209
I think Sk8boarding is one of those things that you must start when you are a kid, when you don't mind falling and hurting yourself, trying to do it while an adult just goes against all your learned safety fears! soubriquet 0
I'm a libertarian. I don't give a rat's about what people do in their personal space, or to each other by mutual consent. Graffiti, along with dogshit, litter and bicycle theft are invasions of my space. When I'm President of the World, these crimes will be punishable by retrospective abortion. bushpig 0
I'm not holding my breath soub! Yeah Tubby, I was gonna say exactly the same thing. While some adults can probably pick it up, I reckon you really need to start when young. There is no way I would even consider trying to learn now some of the things that I still do on my skateboard now that I can. You need that senseless fear of youth to throw yourself down a flight of stairs with a plank and wheels loosely under your feet!
thursday 1
this came from another thread. OUCH!!!!

Right, I will fall for that blatant attmpt to make me reply and post on this thread. Yes, I do indeed have a dirty and sordid past... of pushing mongo! But I am a recently reformed mongo pusher, and now push properly 99% of the time (apart from setting up for backside nollies on a bank for some reason). I skated for ten years before anyone even mentioned it. Regular pushing does make it easier to set up for tricks with short run ups though. Anyway, great TR Oyuki, thanks for doing the write up. I will dig out some pics today to add to this thread. It was a great trip... despite the fact I still had cracked ribs / torn inter-costals (thank goodness for painkillers) which limited my skate. Oh, yeah, maybe video to come soon... although the philistines (or just aging office workers) on SJ might not appreciate it.
soubriquet 0
Hohoho. Aging office worker I may be, but I've trucked my stuff. WTF is mongo?
bushpig 0
Mongo - The Wrong Way: A person skates mongo if they use their leading foot (the foot that is in the front while riding) to push. While they are pushing their back foot stays near the rear of the board and they push with their front foot. Then they put their front foot back on the board, adjust it to the proper angle and adjust their back foot as well.
AK 77 0
It is a derogatory term for what BP describes above. It generally requires a small shift of body position between pushing and riding with both feet on the board, resulting in a less fluid 'connectedness' between skater and board, which is generally accepted to make the skater look less holistically stylish and more awkward. I wish I knew how much nicer it feels to push regular in the past! But I can push really naturally when skating switch now though! By the way WTF is 'trucking your stuff' and why/how did you do this? soubriquet 0
Aha. We had one of those when I was in the army. He couldn't march. He swung his right leg and arm together, then the left. They chucked him out after about two weeks.

What do you "still do now" that you wouldn't consider learning if it was for the first time? Re: Old dogs / new tricks: I started when I was young, but looking back at the periods when I progressed / got worse at skating, it is far more to do with the mental side of it than the physical, and this has not always correlated with age - I am learning harder tricks now than ever, and enjoying it more, and I'm pretty old now. If you want to, you can learn any age but it is no doubt easier to be young - but that goes for most physical activities. What is a bit different with skating is that it's not really about your level, more how much you are enjoying it, and respect/comraderie in skateboarding tends to be irrespective of level, as long as you are trying to push yourself, as slamming hard hurts everyone - beginner to pro. Mamoru, the sponsored ripper of Matsumoto skatepark, pushes mongo and still wins competitions (he is approaching a Daewon Song level in the mini now... ok nearly, but halfcab-bs nose blunt-to fakie, bigspin-bs blunt-bs 180 out, and alsorts of other tech combinations) In plain English, he is an amazing skater but still pushes 'mongo', which makes him look naive and unfinished rather than a malco-ordinated fool.
