muikabochi 208
Just had a fairly strong earthquake here. Quite strong. Shindo 3 or maybe 4 perhaps. Same places as Chuetsu jishin. Scary. I really hate them.
mina2 6
Felt that fairly strong here. I bet that brought back a lot of terrible memories for a lot of people in that area very quickly.
SirJibAlot 0
Yes you did, info is below. Kumapix 0
yeah, I felt that in Itoigawa
muikabochi 208
No more since that one, thankfully. An unkind reminder though.
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan#Andrew 6 Posted January 9, 2007 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted January 9, 2007 Yes that was not nice. I could hear it a few seconds before the house moved. That nasty rumbling noise. It brought back a lot of memories in an instant.
Yuki's Passion 1
It couldnt have been that strong if the cows are still standing
SirJibAlot 0
4.9 close by is a pretty good jolt. Not to go too far off topic....Is there any precedent of earthquakes setting off Avalanches in Japan? -SJA
muikabochi 208
...especially when you have had pretty terrible experiences in recent years and are rather sensitive about these things... It was quite powerful. I haven't felt one that strong for probably getting on for 2 years. Some memories: http://www.snowjapanforums.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi/topic/8/3608.html? gamera 0
At the Chuetsu jishin roughly 2 years ago, I felt it kinda strong shakings even here in Hakuba but this time I didn't. Hope people there are not scared now.
taguchi 0
I saw on news they called it yoshin 余震 from 2 years ago quake and maybe more in years to come. It is one unfortunate thing about Japan I think!
joshnii 2
Wasn't really strong here but I hear it was a shindo 4 where you are muika. Much have been an unwelcome surprise.
SerreChe 2
felt that as well but thought it was pretty short. May have missed part of it.
muikabochi 208
If you were in Yuzawa you wouldn't have felt it as much. It was a 2 there. Interestingly there's a fair bit of difference between Muikamachi and Yuzawa, just 20 minutes away. When Muikamachi gets a 4, Yuzawa gets a 2. (Well in the Chuetsu jishin cases anyway). Apart from the fact that it is further away of course, it seems that Yuzawa is built on more sturdy foundations than us in the valley to the north.
Yuki's Passion 1
Wonder if that region is going to collapse into the sea...
muikabochi 208
Nah, we are surely 'calming down' now (he says hopefully). It's someone elses turn next.
cal 6
Just one in Hakuba I see http://www.jma.go.jp/jp/quake/3/13172600391.html 長野県 震度2 白馬村北城* 震度1 長野市鬼無里* 小谷村中小谷* 信州新町新町*
gamera 0
Yep, cal. I was just going up stairs, so I didn't notice the shaking but noticed the noise.
charlotte 0
I didn't notice that, though I am in Nagano here. Are there often ones in Hakuba?
muikabochi 208
Interesting how the tremors get spread. This one from this morning particularly interesting... goes way up north.
tsondaboy 0
Not that strange though if you consider the fact that the hypocenter was at 170 km, which would place it on top of the subducting Pacific plate. The plate is in contact only with the North-eastern part of the Japanese arc, so thats why you get that strange looking northwards spread on the intensity map.
muikabochi 208
Interesting tsondaboy, thanks.
SirJibAlot 0
I was surpried that I didn't feel it while in Niigata that eve, but when I saw the depth - I figured it was on the Pacific plate - however it's location seems to put it on the transform fault where the Euro, Philippine, and Pacific plates merge. I would have thought more shaking to the south, but perhaps you are right - it was the pacific plate at such a depth. Full report below... == PRELIMINARY EARTHQUAKE REPORT == Region: NEAR S. COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN Geographic coordinates: 34.877N, 138.667E Magnitude: 5.9 Mw Depth: 168 km Universal Time (UTC): 15 Jan 2007 18:17:59 Time near the Epicenter: 16 Jan 2007 03:17:59 Local time in your area: 16 Jan 2007 03:17:59 Location with respect to nearby cities: 27 km (17 miles) ESE (116 degrees) of Shizuoka, Honshu, Japan 90 km (56 miles) ENE (77 degrees) of Hamamatsu, Honshu, Japan 92 km (57 miles) S (174 degrees) of Kofu, Honshu, Japan 132 km (82 miles) SW (229 degrees) of TOKYO, Japan
tsondaboy 0
The subducting Philipine plate base in that area is at about 70 km depth. Also the Pacific plate is not in contact either with the Philipine or the Eurasian plate, but is subducting inside the upper mantle at about 150 km depth. So basically it could have happened only on the Pacific plate at that depth.
SirJibAlot 0
Damn, I thought I knew a lot about earthquakes (being from California), but you are on it! I need to study the plate techtonics of Japan a little more closely - we should go boarding sometime....
