What's with that then?

By age 40, one male in 10 still a virgin

"You've got to be joking, right?" This is how evening tabloid Nikkan Gendai (May 31) reacts to the results of a study by the Japan Family Planning Association titled "Male and Female Life and Awareness."

If Nikkan Gendai is incredulous, it's because of this: 7.9% of the men in the 40-45 age segment claimed they have yet to experience sex. If at least some of the 5% who gave no response are added to the former figure, it means that over 10% of Japanese men in that age group are still virgins. One man in 10.

Is this state of uh, non-affairs, normal? "Generally speaking, in Japan, the ability of men and women to communicate smoothly with each other is somewhat low," observes Kunio Kitamura, director of the Japan Family Planning Association. "We tested the verbal ability of men to engage in seductions, tracking the process that begins with propositioning; offering flowers; inviting to dinner; and then heading for the hotel. Many male subjects just couldn't get it right. According to a survey by Durex, the UK condom manufacturer, in 41 countries men were asked, 'Are you able to convey your own sexual desires to your partner?' As opposed to an average of 41%, Japanese ranked 40th, with 23%. It's natural that they fumble the opportunities to engage in sex."

The aforementioned association's survey showed that many Japanese males in their 40s tended to agree with such statements as "Middle school students should refrain from sex," "Relations with the opposite sex are troublesome" and "One's first sexual experience is a significant event."

"Today's men in their 40s grew up in an environment where high performance on tests meant everything," says Kitamura. "They also stand out as the first generation where adult videos came into wide dissemination, and watching physically impressive actors perform skillfully may have poisoned their own views of sex. Their concerns, over things like being unable to achieve erection, or enabling their partner to reach orgasm, became so oppressive they decided to avoid sex altogether. It came to the point where they were more content simply to masturbate while watching an adult video."

Obviously, remarks Nikkan Gendai, this situation is also likely to impact further on Japan's already declining birthrate. And it's not only men in their 40s who have this problem, since the glut of smut on the web and in the shops is readily available to younger men as well.

"Actually," notes Kitamura, "the current group of teens appears to be engaging in their first sexual experience later than men who are now in their 20s and 30s. Japan is seeking remedies for its low birth rate by improving day care facilities and extending maternity leave. But before that, people should consider giving lessons in 'male-female communications.'"

that still requires at least a little bit of comunication.

would you want to go home with an over weight pudgy 40yr old that quite obviously has never washed his own clothes, cooked a meal for himself, and would rather be at home masterbating and playing on-line games while caked in his own semen?

Has anyone ever seen a "physically impressive actor...perform skillfully" on a Japanese adult video?

i find it actually a little disturbing. it always seems to be bordering on abusive or rape. in fact, rape porn i do believe is legal here. hmmmmm? i don't actually believe that watching porn (compulsively is maybe a bit different) affects you perspectives on the opposite sex, but i do wonder if the abundance of violent porn in this country should be taken into account regarding this issue. is it a symptom or a cause?

That's what I've seen too. The girls look like they are hating every minute of it, have resigned themselves to just lie there and cry half-heartedly while gross, sweaty old man grinds away on top of them. Not too erotic.
I asked Tarzan about it and he said that a lot of J-girls are quite masocistic (sp?) and enjoy it.

Q for the "experienced" guys on here then - can you generalise? Are there differences between W- and J-girls' preferences?

"Ultimately, it's these interactions [conversation] with the opposite sex that bring out the inevitable animal instinct in us -- to reproduce,"

What ever happened to good old-fashioned alcohol???
