I would buy a kickass house for me and my boyfriend to live in and maybe an investment property to rent.

I would give $1 million to my parents and $1 million to his parents, and $50,000 to each of our siblings. Then I'd give $20,000 to our best friends as a wedding present.

Frivolities: I'd buy a puppy, some nice clothes for me and the bf, as well as a new car. Then I'd buy us a two-week ski trip to Japan, including new skiis for us both.

I'd also donate a heap of money to charity - probably towards cancer research and the relief efforts in Sudan.

I wouldn't quit my job but eventually I'd use some of the money to start my own business.

I really hope I win the $19 million - just thinking about this has gotten my hopes up!

The Financial Planner in me would have to tell you that with, $19m you could probably buy a massive portfolio of residential & commercial properties and just live off the rental income. (if you do win, I'll be more than happy to be your adviser! ;\) )

I don't buy lottery tix but the stats are really amazing how many & how quickly winners become broke again.

Indonsm, that's so true. It's so easy to be pragmatic about these things now, but if I were to win that sort of money, I can just see that all of a sudden, a $600,000 house wouldn't be enough. The more money you have, the more you spend.

TJ OZ - you're right. I know I won't win, I never bloody win anything!!!

is that how you value your parents? my parents are worth more than that.
Guess you dont like your brother/sister huh? I think he will want to you to 'share the wealth' a little more.

Snowglider, Indo...

Is how much money you give people really dependent on how much you think they're worth? If that were the case, I couldn't afford it. The amount of money I 'designated' for them is based on several factors:

For our parents - they don't need the money. They own their homes and have all the things they want and need. I just thought that $1 million would allow them to go crazy and treat themselves to whatever they wanted. My mother would probably buy shoes and my father would probably take it to the casino and blow it in one go.

For my siblings - well, they don't really need the money either. My brothers would have a very difficult time accepting money from me (it's an Italian thing). My sister also doesn't need the money and would probably put it away to pay for my nieces' education.

As for my boyfriend's half-sisters - they're 16 years old - to them, getting $50,000 is like getting a million dollars.

Other than sending the parents on a REAL good holiday, paying off siblings mortgages, and purchasing a decent bit of farm land, isn't it obvious?

I'd purchase a small local ski slope in either J-Land, Canada or the US and invite friends and selected people from this website for a weeks free riding - O11 would be specifically invited (contracted?) to provide critique on where I went wrong ... :p ;\)

That does seem to be true.

Funny that though, I know someone who is the opposite. Him and his wife, both now in their 70's, are loaded and have been for a long time. Well, loaded in an 'average person' kind of meaning (probably worth in the region of 5 million UK).

And they are tight. Both it seems to themselves and others. He's glued to the markets every day to see how much he is worth, and he hardly ever spends it. He has this 8 year old computer and he's worried about buying a new one to replace it - whether he can justify the cost or not!!

It's actually quite annoying to listen to him sometimes, knowing how well off they are.

I know a few of them myself as well big-will. Well maybe not of the millionnaire variety but well off people being real stingy. Perhaps thats one of the reasons they got well off in the first place.
