guzzlers-baps 0
Can someone, in simple terms, tell me what this comment might mean, coming from a webmaster: "We don't want everyone and anyone using up all our bandwidth" I'm lost when it comes to computer things. bushpig 0
I assume the comment was directed at you? If so, were you uploading or downloading a lot? That uses up their bandwidth or volume of traffic, which may be limited or expensive for them. Some sites are only allowed to use "x" amount of volume before they reach their limit or have to pay more. If you download a movie, then you have probably used up 700 mb of their "precious" limited allowance.
Ocean11 0
The thicker your bandwidth, the further your missile will travel.
guzzlers-baps 0
I see, thanks. Actually it was directed at someone else on a forum back in the UK. And this bandwidth is fairly expensive for them I suppose.
bushpig 0
presumably for the host of the site. O11 you are a git!
SnowJapan Moderator SnowJapan.Com#4 5 Posted February 1, 2006 SnowJapan Moderator Share Posted February 1, 2006 Bandwidth can cost a lot guzzlers-baps. It all depends of course on how much is being used. When a site gets popular and lots of people use it, bandwidth numbers get bigger and bigger all the time. If a site has lots of photos, images and vids and the like that really mounts up. For example, since we introduced our SJ Photos section our bandwidth usage has increased significantly (and so our bandwidth costs have increased as well).
big-will 7
How much bandwidth does something like SJ use up? Can you tell?
mattlucas 0
Who do you pay for your bandwidth costs? Or do you just have to buy a bigger computer
SnowJapan Moderator SnowJapan.Com#4 5 Posted February 1, 2006 SnowJapan Moderator Share Posted February 1, 2006 Basically you pay hosting companies for bandwidth and many people usually have a per-month allowance. We have a dedicated server for SJ, and it tears through over 10GB a day at the moment. (It's interesting to see how it changes day by day actually, with different promotions we do and the like).
