Got all four wisdom teeth removed yesterday under general anesthetic. I'm starting to look like a Walrus! Who else has had theirs out? I was a bit nervous before being my first time in surgery but it wasn't too bad, I kept focused on arriving in Tokyo in 2 weeks time and riding pow. So far no tooth fairy lol.gif

Creek Boy, That sounds pretty gnarly I'm glad I was under general! Prior to getting mine out mum was telling me a similar story, she got hers out over 2 visits both under local with an entire class of med students watching and taking notes each time.

I'm not keen on Dentists but i'll have to put up with them a bit longer, my jaw is getting broken next! A gap has formed b/w my lower and upper teeth. (Watch me try and eat a nori roll!)

Nicole - Good advice with the constant ice, It's kept the swelling down heaps more than other people i've seen! Thanks

I was a fool and fully underestimated what one goes through during/after the wisdom teeth extraction. I had scheduled a deposition with a very important witness 30 minutes after I finished having my teeth pulled. It was miserable..sitting there with bloody gauze and brand new holes in my mouth, still numb from Novocain....

Good luck with that jaw breaking fb_steve! \:\(

same happened to me CB, I was 14 and had all four out under a general anesthetic, but it started to wear off slightly I remember hearing crunching sounds and groaning.

Mum made me go to school next day too, mouth full of stitches my face looking like a volleyball.

my sympathetic classmates were laughing their asses off too.

I've gotta have mine pulled. Should I get it done in Japan or back in Oz? My misses had hers pulled in Japan in the chair with a local anesthetic! I hear that's standard in Japan and I've heard that dentistry is very good here.

Get it done here mate. It is covered by insurance.

I got my bottom ones done in NZ, a bit like CB above and was charged about $600. 2 hours in the hot seat.
Got the top one's done here in Japan. In and out in 30mins and only cost a little over 1,500yen

Dentists in JP seem to prefer a rotating chair system when they have 2-3 patients going at once. He gave me the local, and then went of and dealt with someone else while it kicked it.
When he came back I was bracing for a marathon session and 2 minutes later it's all done.

Yes, I have the same problem but decided to live with it - the explanation given by several different Dentists kinda horrified me - they surgically remove two pieces of bone from the lower jaw and push it all back, then wire it up until it heals.
(Eating through a straw for several weeks will ensure you lose those extra Kg's put on at Christmas!! eek.gif )

Since it's generally a cosmetic thing, the risks far outweigh the benefits - lots of things can go astray i.e. nerve damage, ‘glass jaw syndrome’, misalignment, etc, so I decided to forget the idea entirely.

Suggest you discuss the issue with several specialists before going through with it – particularly the likelihood of nerve damage (there’s a major nerve that runs around the lower jaw).

Good luck with it.

shifty.gif Maybe I should re-consider the jaw!

It's not definite at this stage, the entourage of dentists/surgeons want to see if my teeth will come closer again by themselves now the force of the wisdom teeth have been removed!

It won't be cosmetic though, my teeth are about 2mm seperated all the way to the last 2 molers, so eating has become quite a chore with some foods. On a date with my now girlfriend at a cafe she said take a bit of her foccacia.. I took a bite, pulled it away from my mouth... and ended up with ALL the fillings hanging out of my mouth and two empty pieces of bread in my hands. NOT COOL! It's a laugh though!

The pro's of my teeth not touching - I can't bite my nails, and I can't bite my tounge off, it just sticks through!

I don't like the idea of messing near nerves, the reason i had to get my bottom two Wisdoms out was because they were almost impacting the nerve along the jaw. The swelling has gone but i'm still getting shooting pains randomly through all my teeth and jaw, the pain killers seem useless against this too!

Grrr, I just want to go outside it's such a nice day! \:\(

haha this is funny stuffs. anyway as a dentist, i can tell you guys, top wisdom teeth are easy to get out than bottom one. In regard to LA or GA, under GA, surgeon is abit rougher since you cant whinge or complain so procedure is more traumatic, ending up more swelling and bruise. As with LA, besides the sound and crunch, dentists have to be gentle, as a result, less bruise and swelling \:\) . I just did a surgical for 48 (lower right wisdom), i gave the gal some valium b4 she came in and she as happy as larry \:\) and didnt complain abit.

ps i will be in niseko on 31/1 so whoever want their wisdom out on the slope...just tight a string to my board lolz... \:\)
