It was obvious that Becks (bless his cotton socks and protected boots) is not near 100% fitness yet.

Second half he was almost anonymous before being replaced.

Yappari, everyone expecting toooo much too soon.

I'm playing manager of a snowboarding resort, so I might as well play manager of the England squad too...

If I was in charge, I'd have said - "You don't celebrate any goal that is less than two ahead. Anybody who so much as smirks when a one-up goal goes in, is straight off the pitch and on the plane home." What happened after the break??

You're right there Will. When Sven Gordon took over, everyone thought even just qualifying was out of the question. His target was to build a team for 2006.

Then we beat the Germans 5-1 at their place, burying the 1966 ghosts in the process. All of a sudden we're world class.

Let us not forget, it hadn't been for Beckham's heroics, we wouldn't have scraped that draw with Greece.

The engineer of the Germany result (Gerrard)is injury-prone and out, Owen looks off the pace, Beckham's not 100%, our most experienced defender (Neville) is out, numerous other players are untested (Mills, Dyer, Hargreaves, Vassell...) It's asking a lot for the boys to do well this time.

Still, as fans you've got to cheer your team on. It's the one aspect of football that they really have got right here in Japan.

COME ON LADS!

Yes. And look at Germanys 8 goals against Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

Does that mean that they are the "superteam" the press here is making out? We can't be sure, but surely NOT - after the way they have been the last few years.

Mr Becks reckon....

HIGASHIURA, Japan, June 5 (Reuters) - England captain David

Beckham says his team will go into Friday's World Cup game

against Argentina believing they can win, despite their

disappointing display against Sweden.

"We've got to believe we can beat them," Beckham told a news

conference on Wednesday as England prepared for the group F clash

in Sapporo.

"We can't go into the game on Friday thinking all we need is

a draw...they've got great players, but so have we and if we can

overcome the hype around the game, then it'll be a good game.

"Our belief after the game on Sunday was down a little bit,"

he said of their 1-1 draw with Sweden in Saitama, when England

were swamped in the second half.

"We admit that to ourselves, but we've lifted ourselves back

up now.

"We shouldn't have been as down as we were but our

expectations as a team are very high. We set high standards. When

we drop them, we get disappointed with ourselves."

Beckham, who broke his foot in April, said he felt 95 percent

fit and could now last 90 minutes -- compared to the 63 he played

against the Swedes.

It's not going to be easy but if they tighten up the mid-field, quit the long balls and give Owen-chan the ball then they can do it. Owen/Heskey will shine. Honest.
