cakehead 0
He'll be there. And I reckon the rest will do him good. Many of the England players are plain knackered right now with the crazy amount of games they play. The rest will do him good, and knowing Becks, his motivation to get back fit will do us proud! scouser 4
Check it out, the Liverpool boys did us good: A goal for new England captain Michael Owen, strikes from Danny Murphy and Darius Vassell, and an own goal gave England a 4-0 win over Paraguay. Prolific Liverpool hitman Owen, who at 22 is the youngest player since Bobby Moore to captain his country, had the perfect start to his big day as he opened the scoring at Anfield with an early header, and in a superb display that is sure to boost the optimism of England fans everywhere, Murphy and Vassell found the mark with two second deflected efforts as Paraguay, who were totally outclassed, saw their night of misery complete as Celso Ayala could only head into his own net late on. Sven Goran Eriksson, who suffered more injury woe this morning due to the withdrawal of Matt Jansen, started with arguably the strongest team he could muster from his depleted squad, as David Seaman started in goal, while Newcastle flyer Kieron Dyer also got the chance to impress, as did Darius Vassell, who took his place up front with Owen. England started the match at a fantastic pace and tempo, and after a typical pacy run by Vassell which was ended cruelly by some typically uncompromising South American defending, Owen exacted quick revenge by giving his side the lead in the fourth minute with a superb header from eight yards after a fantastic delivery on the right from Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool combination of Gerrard and Owen were working superbly in tandem, and after another raking long pass from the former, Owen blazed a volley over from 10 yards in the 20th minute, which by his own high standards he might have expected to have scored with. Paraguay were offering little in attack as England continued to dominate, and Dyer had a great chance to remind Eriksson of his capabilities after 35 minutes, but after a lucky rebound, his shot from close range was blocked well by Ricardo Tavarelli As in the last friendly against Italy, Eriksson rang the changes at half-time as Robbie Fowler, Danny Murphy, Owen Hargreaves, Trevor, Danny Mills and Joe Cole, all were given a chance to impress, and Murphy made an instant impression just two minutes in, as he made it 2-0 with a deflected effort from the edge of the area, and Vassell scored his second international goal in three games with a similar goal in the 55th, as Paraguay now totally dispirited conceded an 77th own goal through Ayala who was under pressure from recently introduced substitute Teddy Sheringham. At Pittodrie, Bertie Vogts's new-look Scotland crashed to a 2-1 double strike from Julius Aghahowa for Nigeria, despite a seventh-minute opener from Christian Dailly. The Republic of Ireland overcame a gritty USA at Lansdowne Road, as a sensational Mark Kinsella opener in the sixth minute, and a Gary Doherty header seven minutes from time helped them to victory. Eddie Pope had headed an equaliser for the USA in the 34th minute. Northern Ireland were given a torrid time as a classy Spain racked up a 5-0 win Windsor Park thanks to a double from Raul, and single efforts from Carles Puyol, Baraja and Fernando Morientes.
