  1. When: March 26-27 Where: Kagura Snow conditions: boot-knee deep spring powder, hard pack, slush, mochi. Another lucky win for my wife and I from the SJ giveaway sent us up to Kagura for two days. We spent the previous day at Sugadaira and drove up through Gunma-ken, which was a lovely and scenic drive. There were some nice looking little ski-jos along the way as well. As we approached Yuzawa Machi, not far from Naeba, the snow started coming down pretty heavily. We went from solid spring conditions to winter in only a few short hours. As it was our first time in this area I was q
  2. I just got back from a Saturday trip to Kandatsu. I must say it's a memorable trip worth going back. If you live in the Tokyo prefecture, the drive is only 2-2.5 hours. The mountain has a park and several areas to play in powder. More details an pix to come.
  3. It looks like this weekend is going to be crazy snow time - hope so - and this morning the sun was out and so it was time to do some Iwappara-ing. Iwappara in Yuzawa, always somewhere I say is perfect for beginners. There's a few pics here showing how wide the main area is. There's really two main bits to Iwappara - the lower wide bit and the top bit. I quickly head for the top quad and pretty much stay there in the top bit. Quite like that top run though there's not a huge amount of variation. Fab views though. Beautiful deep blue skies looking towards the peak, blown out brig
  4. I went to Kandatsu Kogen this morning, hoping and thinking it would be one of my favourite 'deep blue' days. Unfortunately it didn't turn out that way, it was more a milder blue and it actually clouded over and went grey by mid morning. Anyway, I don't really like Kandatsu Kogen. I usually go once a season because I like the views from the top on a clear day. The place kind of annoys me, especially how one third of it - the best bit - is closed on weekdays. But I've covered that before so won't go on about it. I didn't change my mind today. Snow was ok but not as good as I e
  5. Just a quick review here - nothing of Ippy's length. Or so I hope. Background This season, I am trying to get to as many new places as possible, and this is definitely one I have not tried before. I tend to use the JR day return trips, 日帰り, deals as you can get some money off if you plan the trains well, which means more money to spend at the resort. Yuzawa Park Resort is about a 4kms bus ride from Echigo-Yuzawa train station, and there is a free shuttle bus that departs from the East exit, every half hour or so, or on the hour. But be warned, it's quite a small bus, so get there e
  6. The forecast for today was clear bright sunny skies... but it certainly didn't start that way. Not in Yuzawa anyway, with a real grey and thin cloud look to proceedings. But we were ready to go for our half day out and Yuzawa Kogen was the destination so off we went. Yuzawa Kogen is right in the centre of Yuzawa Town, accessed by the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway. We (myself and muika-burazza-zu... say hi....) ...were on the first Ropeway up and got to ski some courdroy on the first run before it got chopped up. When we left a few hours later there was still a fair
  7. Hi all, Just laying the ground work for the next trip. I'm wondering if there is a bus that goes between Yuzawa and Shiga Kogen? The Nozawa section says it takes about 80mins from Nozawa to Yuzawa, but I can't seem to find any info on a Yuzawa to Shiga Kogen Bus. Otherwise I'll have to get the shinkansen back from Echigo-Yuzawa to Takasaki then back up to Nagano then bus to SK, which will kill about 3.5 hours.
  8. With fine weather this morning the plan was to go to Kagura. That didn't quite work out though as too many people also decided to go there, and as we approached the car park there were guys out with signs telling us that the car park was totally full and we needed to move on to the Tashiro car park 7km further along if we wanted to do Kagura today. I can't quite remember ever seeing the Mitsumata car park totally full, so I am sure it was quite busy up there today. We decided to go to Naeba instead and that was probably a good choice because looking at Tashiro even that car park was v
  9. Let's Gala, was what we decided. Both of us on a holiday today and a kind of overcast kind of fine day, so put on the gear - less than usual, because it was warm - and get up there. My it was warm today. Going past the thermometer sign on Route 17 it said 14 degrees. On the way back it said 15. Snow was heavy and sherbet-y. Strange, but a very jerky ride even on groomed courses, almost as if the snow was sticky. Can't think how else to explain it. But on the way to and from the South Area, bits that need a bit of a cross-country push.... not fun. But skiing was ok, even th
  10. This morning was a Gala morning, so I thought 'let's Gala'. And Gala I did. There's a bit of a silly back story and my morning was cut short: http://www.snowjapan...my-lift-ticket/ But while I was there it was great. The snow was really really good. I was quite shocked considering how spring it was on Sunday just up the road. That snowfall the other day really did some big favours. I got there early and so before the crowds... by the time I left it was getting really quite busy. Didn't feel like a weekday at all and I think that is because of the weekday shinkansen cheap packs and
  11. Will be skiing in Yuzawa Mar 1 and 2. If anyone is keen to meet for a few runs, that would be all good.Just reply. Otherwise no worries.
  12. Bright sunshine from early morning today and so I felt compelled to get out there again. And I am very glad I did. Destination Iwappara in Yuzawa, about 25 minutes drive from my home. I really enjoyed Iwappara this morning. The snow was better than yesterday at next door Maiko, which was a bit odd, but there you go. And I really enjoyed whizzing down that top run. I think I did the "just one more lift" thing about 5 times! It is a bit sad to see so many lifts not moving - and not moving for the season. Iwappara have not used their Gondola for handful of seasons now and ther

  14. Well, actually, not really close up.... taken from Yuzawa Kogen. http://www.snowjapanforums.com/index.php/topic/21315-yuzawa-kogen-niigata-3rd-february-2012/ There's been some talk about it so I thought I would take some pics of it all, and here it is. This first one basically shows all of the South Area: Ropeway connecting Gala Yuzawa <> Yuzawa Kogen
  15. Earlier this morning it was snowing heavily and I wasn't thinking I would be skiing today, but it started to clear up mid-morning and by late morning the sun was out. I'm glad I made the move because by the time I got to Yuzawa Kogen, it was really turning blue, my favourite conditions. I haven't been to Yuzawa Kogen that much actually. It's a small place, but what it does have is some pretty fab views of Yuzawa town and on a clear day very good for some shots. I think the paying for the car park thing annoys me as well. There were 2 dudes in charge of the car park. I was there for
  16. Today and yesterday I had rare week days off, so I decided to head back to Yuzawa and try and get some uncrowded turns in at GALA. So imagine my surprise when I get there and the place is heaving!!! Whatever, the snow was coming down a fair whack and the ride up in the gondola really got the juices flowing seeing all that snow. I didn't take my camera this time as the forecast was for snow, snow and more snow so I thought I'd just concentrate on the riding. I'd been to Gala before and wasn't so impressed.....it was fine, I had an awesome day, but I just felt the place was small. i didn't howev

  18. So much for the snow storm this weekend! Well, so far anyway. This morning the clouds soon dispersed and left us with some beautiful blue skies in Minamiuonuma and Yuzawa. I was expecting a day resting as the snow piled up outside, but it was a quick change of plans and out to Kandatsu Kogen in Yuzawa. We went past Ishiuchi Maruyama on the way, and there was hardly anyone there. Much the same story at some other resorts around town. Kandatsu wasn't busy either really. Certainly not as busy as you would expect a resort to be on a Saturday + Christmas Eve. Got to feel that the fore
  19. Ah those first turns of the season are so sweet. The sun was out at Gala Yuzawa this morning making it a truly Gala day! Not busy though it was certainly not empty either. Really nice snow conditions. The have the main Chuo area open, including the top pair lift and run), as well as the quad over on the North area. Can't ski back down to base though. Some pics Silly extra thread here: http://www.snowjapanforums.com/index.php/topic/21002-the-adventures-of-cheese-dessert-at-gala-yuzawa-a-tale-of-scoffing/
  20. Early this morning it was looking like the weather would be good today so I upped sticks and went to Gala Yuzawa, taking 'Cheese Dessert' with me. A cheeky thing he is. Spent most of the day scoffing at signs telling him not to be naughty. Enjoying the view on the way up ...and the view over to Minamiuonuma as well.... (he was scoffing at muikabochi who is busy working today apparently) Going places he shouldn't More sightseeing Riding the lift Scoffing at danger signs ------- Anyway, even with all the scoffing,

  22. Just got the automated Yuzawa Now email..... Kagura will be opening a small part of their main run on Wednesday http://www.snowjapan.com/e/daily/yuzawa-now.php
  23. Today we had a lovely walk up Iiji-san, the mountain that is basically in the central area of Yuzawa - the peak separating the Iwappara and Centleisure Maiko ski resorts in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma respectively. The autumn colours were spectacular, even if we had actually missed the peak by a few days or a week or so. The first part of the walk is up the lower slopes of Iwappara, then you branch off and walk though lots of trees and some fairly steep parts, eventually coming out on the peak. Not a big area, but from there you can almost see 360 degrees all round you -- all of Yuzawa an
