  10. Can anyone fill me in as to what exactly happened to Arai Ski Resort and spa? As far as I understand, it was built around 10 years ago by Sony, operated for a few seasons before going bankrupt. Now it is just another abandoned ski resort rotting away on the landscape..... Does this sound about right? Did anyone ride there when it was operating? Has anyone been there since it closed? Any information would be much appreciated. Neck.
  11. Day 30 March 16th 2014 I also went to this resort courtesy of Snow Japan, so thank you to them! I went to Suginohara about 4-5 years ago and at that time I was probably only intermediate level at best and really enjoyed the resort, despite the fact that thee weather and snow conditions were not the best. I skied from the top of the gondola station, which is about 3/4 of the way up and skied the various slopes available from that point, and as it was foggy it was not easy to see. Well this time the weather was nice and sunny with blue sky and a slight haze, and no wind to speak of.
  12. YES, we did it, MickRich and I did it, we are now members of SnowJapans most exclusive club, a club so exclusive and small that our secret meetings (last Friday of the Month, but only if the month has 29 days) will be held here. Do you need to ask what gives you membership to this most exclusive of clubs, it is of course the ability to utter those immortal words "I have skied/boarded Mt Granview" Yes, I say to all those doubters out there, for I was there to witness it, MickRick has boarded Mt Granview, BUT, yes but, not only did he board Mt Granview he hiked out the back and boar
  13. I though last weekend 1/2 Mar was going to be it for me this season, but I still keep checking the weather forecasts. It was forecast to snow most days from last Thursday till Tuesday. So I asked Mami nicely if I could go skiing on Wednesday. However she wasn't able to get time off, but she did say I could go on the weekend if I wanted. Unfortunately the weekend was forecast to be snowing everyday. While this would have been nice skiing, I really wanted to go out on a day where I could see where I was going. I particularly wanted to see some of the beautiful views I'd only seen to date in
  14. After being lucky enough to win a ticket in the Yuzawa Town giveaway, thank you SnowJapan and Yuzawa Town, I decided to use it at Kagura. A couple of reason for this choice, Kagura is big, has good snow, as a Prince resort kids are free, and it was one of the closest to Kusatsu where we were staying. It's a couple of hours drive from Kusatsu to Kagura, so this meant an early start. In the end we didn't leave as early as planned, but after cleaning 4 cms of new snow off the car we eventually left at 7:45. Not sure whether the decision to remove the expressway option from the routes the Navi
  15. I recently won a Yuzawa town lift ticket (thank you Yuzawa Town and Snow Japan!) and decided to use it as an opportunity for a little mini getaway with the family. There is a hot spring resort hotel in Naeba town close to Naeba Skijo that I had been wanting to stay at for a couple of years and my wife also liked the idea of going , so after work on Friday we packed the kids in the car and were on our way! One of my favorite things about winter in Japan is sitting in a outdoor hot spring bath while staring out over a snow covered landscape and the Yuzawa area is a great place to experience
  16. Hi folks on this wonderful forum, I was hoping to get some ideas of places to stay in or around Naeba. We are traveling around a number of resorts in Nagano and Niigata and will be in the Gala area from the 8th Feb. I was hoping to get a recommendation of a well placed room that is close to the best skiing. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.
  17. Hi everyone there is of course plenty of snow on the ground, and it's still falling. I will be heading up to Niigata tomorrow afternoon-ish. I have room in my car. Otherwise I hope to see some of you out there on the snow!
  18. The original plan last Sunday was to go to Inawashiro, but with rain forecast there, and having felt that I had already spent my share of time getting rained on there this season, with somewhat-assuaged guilty feelings I decided to check out some another region for a change, for the first time since 3/11/2011. Naeba has long been on my list of places to check out, and the free tickets for kids helped seal the deal over competing destinations. Getting up extra early, and after ritually sacrificing a canned coffee to the gods of the Kan-Etsu for their favor, we embarked on our journey to th
  19. I've got an invitation this week to go to either sugadaira resort in Nagano or Myoko kogen in Niigata. I'll have to drive to both so transportantion isn't important. I'm wondering which is your preference?
  20. Well, actually, not really close up.... taken from Yuzawa Kogen. http://www.snowjapanforums.com/index.php/topic/21315-yuzawa-kogen-niigata-3rd-february-2012/ There's been some talk about it so I thought I would take some pics of it all, and here it is. This first one basically shows all of the South Area: Ropeway connecting Gala Yuzawa <> Yuzawa Kogen
  21. THANK YOU SNOWJAPAN for the free lift ticket!!! Here is my review of Myokokogen's suginohara from the perspective of a lower intermediate level boarder on a wednesday. Finding the place was quite easy as the toll booth attendant from the highway gave us a map and told us how to get there. The parking for this place is convenient, better than a lot of other places since there is really only one massive lot. Of course, it was a weekday so it was at about 5% capacity, a MAJOR plus. Myoko in general doesn't get nearly as many foreigners as Hakuba so there seemed to be more exci
  22. A few hours at Ishiuchi Maruyama this morning. One of the first out so lots of groomed runs to spoil, though it was pretty hard and icy early on. Got more sugary later. Definitely spring season feel to proceedings. Gave my legs some good shock-absorber exercise! Curious weather, deep blue contrasty skies in one direction, hazy and wishy-washy out looking back home. Didn't get the camera out much either, another curiously not-really-bothered morning, so just took a few snaps. Looking towards home
  23. Here's a short vid showing the fantastic conditions at Kagura yesterday - hard to believe this was taken at 3 pm on a public holiday at one of Niigata's most popular resorts. I got a fair bit more footage from the day so I'll try to edit something together.....
  24. Today is the first day/night of the annual Tokabochi Tokamachi Snow Festival. Tokamachi is about 30 minutes drive from Muikamachi, in the next valley parallel to where I am. We had clear skies earlier on this evening but it started snowing which kind of spoilt some of the later photos I took, but here's some anyway to get an idea of what was on show.
  25. Myoko Kogen Jan 6-8 2013 Sunday January 6th 2013 Resort: Suginohara Snow Condition: Groomed but not hard on the runs and day old stashes off-piste. Weather: On the way to the mountain in the morning we had glimpses of blue sky but once we arrived the weather was overcast all day. Luckily the cloud was quite high up so visibility was still good. The day: Being the end of the New Years holidays I was a little concerned the resort would be very busy but I guess everyone had already gone home because we didn't really have to wait for a lift all day. This was the first time
