  1. Looking into catching a daytime bus from kyoto to nagano but can't find any details on English websites. Anyone know if this possible or would someone do a search for me on the Japanese websites. Much appreciated. Cheers.
  2. So the JTB multi resort pass is available to buy now. It seems to have 2 extra resorts added from last season. Last season I bought this pass and continued using it at Tsugaike and Kashimayari well into April, maybe even until May. It is a great pass for sure and I am 90% sure I will get it again this season. On the JTB website, it seems to say that the pass can only be used until March 31st. Does this mean that the pass expires earlier than it did last season? I called the JTB staff and asked them about this (in my limited Japanese), and the old guy on the line seemed to think that it
  3. So I made it to Hakuba on one of those stunning blue sky days. Here's a bit of words and all the photos from my two days there this week: Hakuba Goryu & Hakuba 47 http://www.snowjapan...-february-2012/ Happo-one http://www.snowjapan...-february-2012/ I though I would write down my thoughts on Hakuba in general, and inevitably I will be comparing things to the region where I live - Minamiuonuma in Niigata-ken. I was happy to arrive in Hakuba and see those blue skies. And as always, that first view of those mountains is always exciting. The mountain backdrop that Haku
  4. First part of this trip report from Hakuba Goryu & Hakuba 47 here: http://www.snowjapan...-february-2012/ For the afternoon, I moved over to Happo-one. Words will just spoil it, so here's photos I took there. Look out for really tiny people in some of them. I'll post some general thoughts tomorrow.
  5. Recently I have been working on days I normally wouldn’t work, just so that I can be sure to be in a position to make the most of clear and sunny days and go skiing then. Monday 20th was looking like it would be an almost guaranteed fine clear day over in Hakuba – with clear skies forecast for the night before and after - so I asked my boss (me) and luckily he said it was ok. So Hakuba it was. Dreams were about to come true! It takes just under three hours to get there from where I live (curiously, more like two and a half coming back – probably because when I got it is very early morni
  6. This goes to show you don't have to go down the hill from Shiga Kogen to see the snowmonkeys When the sun is out they like to join their slightly more upright brethren in town. This shot from my hotel room at Ichinose. The critters are sitting on the balcony overlooking the main pedestrian thoroughfare checking out the humans checking them out. http://youtu.be/y6Mba9NZz7k
  7. My pops is coming to stay with me for a couple of weeks from the middle of March. He is keen to get out to ski for a couple of days, but doesn't want to haul his skis and poles over here. He will bring his boots only. Does anyone in the Nagano/Hakuba area have some spare skis they can lend, give, rent or sell me? I guess he needs something in the 170cm range and some poles. Ideally, skis that don't need to be waxed or edged would be best. He only skies on groomers, so any regular skis would be fine. Please let me know if you have some spare skis knocking around and can let me borro
  8. Finally got round to adding a few pics from are skiing last Saturday. After contemplating where to go due to the doggy weather, we decide to opt for a very high resort fairy close to home. The base is at 1500 metres above sea level, so knew it would be snowing there for sure. Anyway no report, as I did one on this last year, just simply sharing a few pics mostly from the 5km cross country course we went on as well as the ski slopes. Along the way on the 5 km cross country course A snowy crossing A frozen lake on the way Only 3 km left to go A snowy stream

  11. Well after having my first day of the season on Boxing day with my daughter and expecting to be rather achy the next day, we decided to stick to a small resort not to far away. As I had been to some of the Shirakabako resorts before, I thought we would try a different one, especially as with a discount ticket it cost just 2700 yen for a day ticket and my daughter was free! Anyway Shirakabako is part of the Shirakabako resort chain in Chino part of Nagano, not that far from Suwa really and it is only a small resort. Basically 2 beginner courses, two intermediate courses and supposedly

  13. Just a question for those that have better than a primary school japanese grasp. There are 5 of us going from Tokyo to Nagano. Just wondering if there was a cheap way to buy 5 tickets? I read somewhere you could get a book of 6 tickets called Kaisuuken or something. Are these available for the Nagano shinkansen? How much do they cost? Where do we get them from? Does anyone else have other ticket sets or something they've found that works? I think with the amount of people heading to Hakuba, Shiga Kogen, Nozawa O and other places, I would have thought this would be a FAQ.
  14. Just a few picks from our trip in 2009. Nozawa truly has a mellow village atmosphere and friendly vibe. From the narrrow cobbled streets to old ladies cooking in the hotsprings as they heve been doing for hundreds of years, this place is somewhere that should definitely go on your 'bucket list' Oh, it snows a bit here as well
  15. Not a lot of action pics as I was videoing mainly but these pics will give an idea of the extent and layout for those who have not been yet. Click on pics to enlarge.
