So it snowed a decent amount in Hakuba on Tuesday night, Wednesday and last night too. Seems like up to 30cm in some places down in the valley and up to 60+ up top! Has anyone hiked up there for any early turns yet? How is it? Thinking to dust off the beater stick and hike up there with a buddy this weekend if it doesn't get warm before then....

I have a guest coming to stay with me for a while this winter and want to take him riding around Hakuba/Otari for a few days. I am looking for any suggestions or recommendations for simple, minimalistic accomodation in the area. I will be taking him to Cortina and Tsugaike mainly, and looking to stay somewhere for maybe 3 nights without breaking the bank! Any help would be greatly appreciated. NECK.

So I made it to Hakuba on one of those stunning blue sky days. Here's a bit of words and all the photos from my two days there this week: Hakuba Goryu & Hakuba 47 http://www.snowjapan...-february-2012/ Happo-one http://www.snowjapan...-february-2012/ I though I would write down my thoughts on Hakuba in general, and inevitably I will be comparing things to the region where I live - Minamiuonuma in Niigata-ken. I was happy to arrive in Hakuba and see those blue skies. And as always, that first view of those mountains is always exciting. The mountain backdrop that Haku

First part of this trip report from Hakuba Goryu & Hakuba 47 here: http://www.snowjapan...-february-2012/ For the afternoon, I moved over to Happo-one. Words will just spoil it, so here's photos I took there. Look out for really tiny people in some of them. I'll post some general thoughts tomorrow.

Recently I have been working on days I normally wouldn’t work, just so that I can be sure to be in a position to make the most of clear and sunny days and go skiing then. Monday 20th was looking like it would be an almost guaranteed fine clear day over in Hakuba – with clear skies forecast for the night before and after - so I asked my boss (me) and luckily he said it was ok. So Hakuba it was. Dreams were about to come true! It takes just under three hours to get there from where I live (curiously, more like two and a half coming back – probably because when I got it is very early morni

Annoying that it isn't open yet, hey? I see they need 150cm to be able to open that up because it's protected national park but Happo still only has 140cm up top officially. Come on snow, just another 10cm or so. It can't be too much to ask, especially in Hakuba.

So ive heard lots of good things about cortina but I really wanna know what its all about and whether its worth the extra travelling time. Whats the tree skiing policy like these days? How much more snowfall does it actually get compared to other hakuba resorts? How long do you have at the weekends before its all tracked out? Cheers.

Hey Fine to meet you guys. Greg in Chicago here. Two of us have been eyeing Japan up the last few weeks and think we make make the move. We have a month and thinking of a three week trip over there. Would love to check out Tokyo and from what I gather Niseko and Hakuba seem to be the main two places. Or is that just most popular places? Thinking of doing 7-10 days in Hakuba and then wondering about the practicalities of getting up to Niseko. I can see maps and stuff, that's fine, just wondering for first hand experiences of people on here who might have done that trip. Real
