What is the elevation difference between the Tateyama peak and the Hakuba peaks? Isn't Tateyam significantly higher? -

Niseko I can't compare to as I haven't been (first trip in January). But Kagura's big plus point is that it is conveniently located. Hakuba - Internet Cafes
OkemoLoon replied to gurgle's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Many of the lodges and hotels have internet access. So if your staying somewere in Hakuba call your hotel ahead of time and find out. Not sure of any actual internet cafes though. -
Avalanche Education Heres a link to some online tutorials for some basic avalanche education including a virtual backcountry tour Interactive Backcountry Tour that involves some basic decision making. Most of it is basic stuff, but its a great place for newbies to get started and for all you BC studs to refresh. Good reading for anyone who wants to learn about avalanche safety.

In the states resorts use explosives and all kinds of cool stuff for avalanche control. Someone told me they can't do that in Japan because there are no explosives in Japan, (something about its in their constitution or the Americans won't let Japanese have them after WWII). I don't really know, its probably just BS but I did hear something like that. So what methods do resorts use here? and is that the big reason why there are so few resorts that have lifts above the tree line? It seems like there is so much more potential at some of the resorts here if they just took the lifts hig

I love saturday night dumps. Kagura now says that the whole area will be open starting saturday. I hope that means the upper lift will be open. What is the name of that lift anyways. -

Yeah, thats right, cost me 8000 in fuel and about 10000 in tolls for round trip. Sunday at Kagura sounds good to me, if I was going for 2 days I would go to Hakuba instead but Im not going to be able to do that this weekend. Sound good TB? -

pants
OkemoLoon replied to Yuki's Passion's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Im using North Face Revolution Pants. Dam good for the money, 2 zip pockets on the hips and one velcro on the thigh. They have side zips for ventalation too. I was able to pick them up for a great price (100$ on SAC) and just couldn't bring myself to spend the extra cash on ArcTeryx, Marmot, or Mountain Hardware. Yes theres better stuff out there but this will be my 3rd season with these and I have no complaints -

So when I wash my gortex stuff I should be using Nikwax not regular detergent and dry on low heat? Every time I wash my stuff the next time I wear it, it sucks up water like a sponge. -

Chances are I will be up ether Sat or Sun. Not sure which yet, probably wait for the weather report and find out which day is better. I know TB wants to go as well. Maybe we can have a SJ session early morning.
