  1. Turning skiers left off the top of the Cosmo Four lift at Goryu, there it was: a particularly meaty looking GS course with some serious looking 20-somethings banging through the gates at a hell of a rate of nauts.

Well, it had only been 22 years since I last raced and it's obviously like riding a bike, thought I, so why not??

I just wish I had been warned about the Invisible Tradie of Goryu. You know , the one who skies alongside you after gate 2 and blow torches your quads with an acetylene cutter forcing you to retire to the café doing a very good impersonation of Billy Connolly's drunk man walk!!

    PMSL!

Well....not literally...if it was literally I'd really be feeling old!

  2. AGEING SUCKS BIG TIME!!!! In my mind I am still in my 30's then i catch a glance of my reflection and wonder who that old woman is.

I was so fit, fabulous and healthy until 45 NOW I am on a first name basis with my doctor

AND what is the go with all the aches and pains in the mornings when you get up. BLAH I want to be young again :eyes:

    Oh SNAP!

    I can so relate!

But I'm fighting it with everything I've got.

There shall be no such thing as ageing gracefully.

  3. Is it actually any cheaper to pre-buy? I know that in our countries they give these offers but I don't know how common they are here unless you are buying a season pass......regardless of what ur travel agent is saying. Tell them to jog on, buy ur tix ftom the local convini for discounts and that gives u tge freedom to check out other places if the weather is crud

AFAICR there is only a financial advantage to buying a season pass in advance in Niseko (but that was a few yrs ago).

The biggest advantage of buying ahead of time to have in your accomodation when you arrive is no time wasted queuing up for tix.

That's more of an issue in Aus (or other crowded poorly staffed resorts over the world), but less so in Japan. Even at peak time in Niseko at the main spot for purchases it's not bad. We had to go there to get a student season pass in December. I got my pass and the all mountain points passes at the Family lift base (took 5 minutes), used the all mountain pass for Junior to go up family and quad, skied down to Gondie, bought kid the season pass (took 20 minutes - photo/big form to fill in etc) - had a loo pit stop while doing so, then back out onto the Gondie for the day.

Westerners are often indoctrinated that they need to buy in advance. Not necessary in Japan. Honest.

  4. Flights locked in for Dec/Jan woohoo!!

I'll report on how effective the heating is ;)

when you coming over MB are you going to make the day trip?

Arrive 27th Dec. Leave 12th Jan.

(Once again cramming the family getaway in between Christmas with the family, during the National League training recess and before the baby cub has to get into compulsory summer holiday school water polo training!)

Definitely doing a day at Rusutsu again, might have a gander at Kiroro also.

Be good to have a slide together :)

Yeah I will be there just let me know when you are coming over

At this stage we're having HME take us for a day trip/guiding sesh there, so we can get the most out of it. (Also throwing some work a mates way ;) )

But I'll def let you know when we are there, especially if we come back a 2nd time on our own!!

  6. Yeah just get the Grand Hirafu passes and see how you go our family never used the all mountain pass.

Pay now and cop the fees and get points on your credit card. I predict the dollar will drop approx 5% anyway so you will be in front. This is only a prediction though so please don't take my line if our passes cross and I am wrong.

I have just been told I don't have to pay for my accom or passes till Jan but will most probably cash in now that way may save a few beers on the exchange rate

I buy Grand Hirafu passes and also an all mountain points pass, wrap it in foil and tuck it into an ankle pocket or similar. Then if we do get lucky with weather we can go wherever and know we can get back with the alfoil wrapped safety net. Use up at end of trip.

  7. Having done the Hirafu-zaka yardsale more than once, MB, I'm not complaining, just :grandpa: observing.

    DiGriz

I was trying to recall how many times and where I've fallen over in the village.

IIRC (apart from those little recoverable slips...) I've fallen flat on my front at Gondola Chalets the first year I went (noob) and did some boob damage - and then last March I ended up laying down in a heap with my girlfriends at 4am on the opposite corner to the works in that pic (in front of Seicomarto) - but it was less about the ice and more about the intoxication ;)

That's not bad for a notoriously slippery village and an old unco gal ;)

  8. Hmmm, every time there was a decent snowfall (when I was around) in Jan & early Feb last season, those heated sidewalks were well covered.

Nice enough in late Feb & March, I suppose.

I agree. But when there's a decent snowfall and they're covered it is soft and you're not sliding on it.

I like that the ice will be melted away. That exact spot there in the pic I'd be carrying two sets of skis for my skiing friends while they battled to not fall over on the ice. And my snowboarding friend would have her board and mine. Board boots are such an advantage!

I am much more interested in what's going up on the corner block that used to be Paddys though!

Tall building...I'd say accommodation, but be nice to know if there's shops/restaurants etc in the ground floor.

  9. Personal training/kickboxing/strength training to keep me relatively fit (have had 6 months off due to illness and injury so that hasn't helped)

And backing it up - Southern and Northern Hemi adventures every year for the last 8... Sometimes just a week, sometimes much more, but even just a weeks freshen up in July can make all the difference.

I now find that first skate into the lift queue of the new trip I feel all unco. But by the time I strap in up the top it's all back and form is switched on. It used to take a couple of days.

  10. How did you break your arm MB?
Waving it around at water polo?? :D

Great try JA but not quite..

Pushing through the red line on repeat on a crackerjack day at Mt. Hotham.

I was having a blast, really opening it up, out with a bunch of excellent skiers and we were all going hard.

It was a nothing accident...3 cartwheels and a 100m slide before I could arrest (it was pretty steep), I got up, dusted off and realised I'd hurt my arm (which ended up under my body after the slide) when I pulled my jacket down.

I was riding with an ex patroller so she quickly got into patrol mode and bullied me off to the med centre. I was going to keep riding

She tried to get patrol but I was having none of that. Snowboarded to the lift, up to the med centre and walked in just to appease her.

The doctor, my friend and I all thought it was just a sprain...but we were wrong. X-rays showed a nice neat fracture across the distal radius following the line of my watch! Doh!!! Stupid watch!!

3 weeks post break I was back riding in a thermoplastic cast at Thredbo, 4.5 weeks post break I am back at personal training - modified of course...legs legs and more legs. Can have the cast off in a little over a week I think. :)

  11. Briefly Wizard we have an apartment managed by HT.

    They do a great job.

Renting it out for the entire first snow season we found the income covered the costs for the first 2 seasons (no mortgage).

The 2nd season we had it blocked as owner use only, this season again - but it'll cost us this year.

Next season I think we will block a few weeks for us and rent it out the rest.

    Hope that helps.

  12. Well sadly I have PACKED the weight on. Went from triathalon fitness to a couch potato. 1st diagnosed with Lung Heart problem then developed frozen shoulder that last for 2 years but still managed to exercise with my arm strapped to my body. THEN just as the arm was coming right SMASHED my foot. It has taken 18 months for the foot to come good and now the fitness and weight are SHOT!!

Hardest thing for me thing for me because of my heart problem i am not allowed to do any cardio work at all :-( But I am determined to get some sort of fitness back for my AWESOME ski trip next year. ;)

    That's tough yards Snowhuntriss.

I've been plagued with health challenge after health challenge recently also.

Hoping to get a good run up to December now though!
