First snow in the village HAKUBA
moloneb3 replied to stemik's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Will it be packed out on Monday??? Thinking of going. -
Do you reckon Michael Flatley will make the team for the added intimidation!! What about the other nations, France, Italy, SA, Australia etc? Wonder what they'll do.....

I think it is ok!! If you are good enough you will beat them. I think in today's modern world we are trying too much to get rid of old traditions. I think the Irish team should do a jig before our games!!

If you look up on the web there is some scientists that are predicting a cooling period similar to the one 400 years ago. Apparently, the sunspot activity is at its lowest since that time (dunno how they know) but this correlates to temperature decreases on Earth. Some people say it will happen, some not! Who knows. One positive is that the north pole didn't break last years minimum cover record. Gives the poor auld polar bears a chance, so this is good. Lets hope it is cooling. I believe global warming is happening, but then in the 1970's I would have believed that global cooling was hap

Whistler Blackcomb - end April
moloneb3 replied to moloneb3's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Thanks for the information! I like the auld spring skiing. So I think from that point it is ok! As long as there is snow I will be happy! Now to looking at flights and costs. Thanks for the tips. -
I was wondering if any of the many members on SJ have experienced Whistler at the end of April? One of the lads I am working with asked me on Friday if I would be interested in going for a week (just before the golden week hols) and I said I would. Has anyone ever skiied that late in Whistler? If so what should I expect? Any tips or hints would be appreciated! PS weather in Hakuba was perfect today! What a great day.

Japan racism 'deep and profound'

The question I have is why women are outliving men??? The poor guys work all their lives (albeit not hard work if my company is to go by) and then die! Life sucks eh! -
Good movies you've seen recently

I saw the Upside of Anger last night. It was ok, some funny bits in it. Although, it did make me question how Kevin Costner fell off the scence so ungracefully after Dances with Wolves & The Bodyguard?! -
Japan racism 'deep and profound'

I think GN's point is a generalisation and there is always exceptions. Generally I think he is right, but of course there are people who are not like this! Also, my experience is what Japanese people say to us gaijins is much different to what they say to native Japanese. Therefore, I would look to see how people behave in Japanese surroundings before judging if they are expressive of their feelings/opinions or not!! -

Was it busy today? -
Dont know anything about Austrlias politics? Why was he so bad? I hope it is not just Iraq that people judge him on (which is quite big), but what else did he mess up? Here people loved Koizumi and when I asked what he did (asides from talking about "REFORM") then they were stumped..what did he reform, change or do????? Then the next idiot Abe-San just spoke about his "reform agenda"! Somehow people didnt buy it and he got the chop. Again I dont know too much about the detail, but would be good to hear why people dislike Howard?

About the jury thing, this goes for any country! At the end of the day judges are human too and will read the same papers as the general public. Also, the fact there is no juries here makes me more nervous. I would sooner bet on 12 people than 1!!! One other example is a friend of mine who joined a gym, then stopped for a few months. Then he went back with his girlfriend (both from Germany) and wanted to join. They said he needed to backdate his membership but he refused. There was a special offer for couples, but after some discussion they said the offer wasnt open to foreigners. -

Japan racism 'deep and profound'

Whilst racism may be benign in our daily lives, if something happens are we equal in front of the law. There is an acceptance of Westerners here in Japan which I imagine a lot of us on this site are!!!! However, if you are asian (not Japanese asian!) how are you treated, or another race? I have a friend from Jamaica and he was stopped 6 times in 6 months for ID, and 4 other times just for questions! It is ridiculous! I went to a bar one night (didnt know it was one of the girly bars) and it said "No foreigners allowed" in English (and there was no mistakes with L or R's). It didnt bothe -

I think most racism is passed down from parents! I play with my company team and one of the lads had his son there, bout 4 yrs old. So he said to his son, instead of asking my name, say hello to gaijin-san!! I felt like standing on his neck, but realised that it happens everywhere. Instead I felt sorry for the child and the example that is set by his father, automatically creating a division. Anyways, people tend to align themselves in groups. Some do it by race, music, religion, football teams, some ski or snowboard.....this then creates divisions! Unfortunately, I dont see and end to al -
Who did Kagura yesterday?

Ok thanks for the info! This site is great! One of the major reasons I came back to Japan was the ability to ski! The reason I know about resorts in Japan is cos of snowjapan - so thanks!! Going to Kagura Sunday! Really looking forward to it. Getting my first set of skis ever tomorrow! Equally as exciting! -

Who did Kagura yesterday?
moloneb3 replied to Mudguts's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Does Kagura open today? I am thinking of driving for 4 hours to go there on Sunday becuase I just cannot wait to get out skiing. On the SJ site it says closed. Also, forecast is for warmer weather so the second question is whether it is worth it? I am literally dying to go, my Japanese teacher says my face "lights up like a child" when I talk about the snow season! Therefore I would like decent conditions if I drive 4 hours.
