This is especially for outside noise reducing dj headphones. At the very least you can prepare to get hit. also, listening to music means you're not concentrating 100% on your run and that could lead to an accident. You can't compare listening to music in a car to listening while riding. A more apt example is listening while riding a bike. but whatever, -
When i had to send stuff back to the UK the post office was significantly cheaper than any shipping company i could find. But if anyone knows of any cheaper companies, please post!

sleeping in the car
AK 77 replied to tsondaboy's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
good topic. thanks for all the experiences related! I think I'll go for the womens' changing rooms. My plan for 'car camping' was going to be one or two of those foil covered mats (got already - they are cheap), my thermarest, and either down bag with a new goretex cover bag, or a big synthetic bag rated down to low temps but hopefully not too expensive as it can be as bulky as you like (to be left in the car for emergencies - i'm not sure i'd want to leave my down in the car that much). But that shouldn't so often as I'm going to put on my home made Toque mask and body hair wig -

AK 77 replied to Early Cuyler's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
I have ridden resort alone with headphones - yes, it is less safe, and makes any accident you have much more likely to be your fault, so you have to look more - just like driving a car, you can't hear shit then either you have to check everything visually, You just have to do the same when riding in resort. For example you know that you can't hear someone shouting that there is someone splattered in the landing of a jump, so you have to check visually that they have emerged (but often you can't hear anyway - hence the need to look for people's crossed arms visual signals anyway). The only t -
eastern exposure

back on topic - in UK snowboard magazines (before you laugh, that's propbably alot MORE exposure than in snowboard mags in snowy countries where people just ride instead of reading magazines instead - there are 3 major mags in the UK alone!) Japan articles have been there for the last 5 years, with one article like this one each year, usually in Whitelines, and usually visiting Niseko/Hokkaido but not always. Before I came to Japan last time in 1999, i based my location preference choices on an article in Onboard european snowboard mag about Niseko and Hachimantai in Iwate, and I ended up -

Pipe boards
AK 77 replied to damian's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
cheap and pipe boards don't usually go hand in hand, but you can usually find some good deals on last years models as they don't always sell that well... Burton Powers for example - has hardly changed in the last 3 years - you should be able to find one cheap somewhere. The Raven (not made this) and T6 both grew out of Balance pipe board of Terje, but are not as pipe specific as the Powers. Head intelligence pipe board from last year looked nice, plus there was a 162 version, and it's suposed to get stiffer when you go faster (by magic small robots tensing their metalic abs inside -
Pipe boards
AK 77 replied to damian's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Pipe boards are stiff not flexible, as the two posts above point out. They are very different from 'park' boards which tend to be shorter and wider and alot softer. I am a big fan of pipe boards for freeriding, for the following reasons: 'Freeride boards are designed for stability at speed so have long sidecut radius's (radii ??) and wide waist widths. This makes them stable but less manouverable. Pipe riding is about edge control - even more than freeriding is - and quick edge to edge transfers, so pipe boards have narrow waists (under 24.4 to 24.8 typically) and tighter r -

AK 77 replied to eskimobasecamp's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Quote: Originally posted by SerreChe: Cheers for the info quattro. I will give it a go. So you basically scrape off the excess wax from the tuning and then once smooth, brushed and all, you add your own wax. Still a bit worried I scrape off too much (I will try to judge based on your comment above), will try to be gentle. No! You can't scrape too much! Scrape hard until nothing more comes off - the wax is supposed to be IN the ptex, not ON it. -

4. A green pan scrubber type thing - for 'structuring' - scraping lots of small lines/scratches lenghtways into the base / wax of your skis. As skis don't work so well with a completely smooth flat base. A metal bristled brush can do the same. -

AK 77 replied to eskimobasecamp's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
As you live in Japan (soft snow most of the time) edge sharpening is not going to be needed - at most once or twice a year, unless you hit alot of rails. So essential tuning kit would be: 1. Iron (either old non-teflon one as FT said, preferably without the holes in for steaming, or ski one from ICI sports or Alpen - best price i've seen is 5000 for good one in ICI) 2. Wax - important: good wax is faster but also much more expensive. 3. Scraper - plastic or metal for skiis. Thats it - you don't need base cleaner, it's a waste of money and dries out your base. Parks parks and parking
AK 77 replied to stewart's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
yeah, the 47 park is not bad at all, and there are other fun parks too, Yanaba also in Hakuba, for example. I didn't want to bad-mouth the area (it's where i'll be riding!) but just wanted to avaoid any disappointment compared to American parks. Japan has other things to offer that are great too, like all the snowfall, the onsens (hotsprings) after riding, food, etc. hope you come and shred!
