  1. In my own case, I was met at the base of a resort in Hakuba, by another gaijin coming off the hill at 9:30am. He offered me his day pass for Y1000. Am I to righteously say "No, thank you", and head to the ticket counter? I'm sorry, I know the resorts (along with most of the rest of the J economy) are struggling, but sorry, I'm just not that altruistic. I use thepiratebay occasionally too. There. Off my chest.
  2. Well articulated Gareth. Why should they be able to double-dip? Point taken Black Mountain. Your analogy is better, and even easier to be at peace with.
  3. It's the same as ripping a copy of a friend's purchased CD. I've done both, and sleep well at night.
  4. In the time of Plato, Asia refered not to the massive land mass we think of, but the lesser area containing Turkey, etc. Still a big island though...
  5. Sorry I missed it, we left Hokkaido the day it opened. Maybe next time. Saw it in '05, though, and agree with Thursday that the night lighting really adds something to the sculptures.
  6. I'm in Furano as I type, and as far as the thread title is concerned, I vote for Nozawa.

We felt like we were the only Australians skiing there, and now all the commercial snow travel package companies have Nozawa on their books. I hope it doesn't get too much attention, I really liked the feel of the village, and wasn't at all d
  8. Here's some cheddar I caught trying to duck the ropes at Furano. Last photo from me, Cheeseman, I'm off home tomorrow, hope the gallery fills out nicely. Will be checking in to see how it's going.

But take enough cash so you don't need to.
  10. Not very classy, but here is some cheese-like substance in the trees at Kamui Ski Links. Not an easy shot to take, I had to take my skis off in knee-deep snow. Hope that's penance enough for the Natto diversion, Cheeseman...
  11. No the prices are the same (or higher, in the case of lift passes), it's only the AUD that's changed. Not trying to sound harsh, but it is wishful thinking to hope that the Japanese will drop their retail prices to accomodate the Aussies. Suck it up. Especially in Hakuba, where the Aussie tourists are still in the small minority.
  12. I'm forty, and still progressing, but it doesn't get any easier... I wish I was 35 again.

Yes general living costs and lift passes. Camembert Cheese in Coop in Kutchan = Y600 = $10.50 Cup of flat white espresso coffee in Hirafu = Y600 (vending machine canned coffee Y120-150) Petrol @ Y100/l = $1.75/l Day lift ticket a

  15. And on the stinkiness, I've eaten cheese that makes natto smell like fresh flowers.
  16. Phool and I managed to leave our families at home (his youngest daughter is 6 weeks old) to go skiing in Japan. I consider it a great achievement. But the snow gods have punished us for our ambition...
  17. But check the exchange rate before you commit to Japan. Canada might be the go for your first overseas ski trip. We're in Hokkaido now, and not for the first time, and the prices are killing us.
