Most people use it for two main reasons, it's free, and it's not Microsoft. Don't almost all computers come with the OS? The mainstream masses won't be interested, it's for people who like to tinker, no?

It's a bit of a mess on a non touch machine I think. Not knowing how to turn the thing off or open programs is a pretty basic thing. It's as if they made that kind of decision to just be as radical as possible.
