I find that they are sticter as it gets closer to take off (they know the weight pretty much by then?) and in peak holiday days.

I've had a different experience with them actually. I pre-ordered a CD, and it came 2 days after release date, 3 days after I could have got it in the local CD shop. It put me off them.
