I can't provide much advice on the plan as from that list I have only been to Mt Dobson (and that was last week) I live closer to the southern lakes areas so I usually end up there. Dobson has lots of snow, but the terrain is fairly limited and its not all that
  3. Best bring your Calcium Sulphide to Burtonise the water if you plan on brewing any English IPA's while you're there.
  4. Some pics from Mt Dobson. The wind got into the snow the day before and made these wierd wave sort of shapes. When I seen it I thought it would be awful paste but I was super pleased to find it was still soft. Also only some aspects were like this, the others were smooth.
  5. To me, beer is a bit like music, there is a time and a place for every style. (though there are not many places or times when I wouldn't like a big IPA)
  6. 2.5metres at mt dobson (about a metre in queenstown where I usually go) out the door now
  7. Last minute decision just got made, going to Mt Dobson tomorow, 80cm new snow and it was closed today while they dug out the road etc.. sunshine tomorrow, just hope the snow wasn't blown to bits by the wind that some of the other places got. I'v gotta get packin, leaving in an hour.
  8. I lock the door when I am out - because I fear that my house will be burgaled while I am out. I wear a seatbelt because I fear I may crash, I generally dont speed for fear I may get a ticket, I look before I cross the road for fear I may be hit by a car. Despite the world of fear I live in I feel fairly well adjusted. Locking the door to stop the burglars is probably the least effective action on the list though. I'm sure burglars dont go door to door seeing which ones are locked and burgiling the unlocked ones. I think most burglars assume they will have to do a little breaking b
  9. Christ thats a bit harsh. I don't think anyone can claim they have never lost control, caught an edge, hit an enexpected bit of ice etc.. Gives me the willies hearing about death or serious injury because it could so easily be me or someone I know. I usually hope that the story about what happened includes them doing something stupid so that I can put it in the "it wont happen to me" catogory. The reality is though that it would not take that much bad luck for it to be me. (or you.) Still, going skiing and taking a little risk beats sitting safely in a chair waiting for cancer or
  10. Bad year for deaths.. Mt Hutt (surrounds) have had 4 die this season!! 1 was on the access road though. The snow has been pretty fast and hard this season and from what I can tell in the news reports they tend to fall/slide 100-300 metres over/through rocks. I have never made it to Mt Hutt but they must have a bit of exposure.
  11. Being that the boot model is the "jah love" I'm gonna have to agree with minty though medussa would have been good too. The boots fit well (phew!) I just have to wait for a week and a day to use them (unless I can get up to wanaka for work and go for a little ski afterwards before then) Only my 4th pair of boots ever, lucky they last a long time cos they feel like they cost a fortune. If I had got them in NZ they would be almost twice what I paid for my season pass.
  12. No way! August is prime time. We are just about to get started properly after a dry july. (apart from the missus is sick so we are going to miss a weekend)
  13. I don't think that I can claim "best looking gear"... but today I have a pair of these sitting at home waiting for me when I get home from work. Bit of a gamble ordering boots of the internet without trying them on but I was assured that the fit was "very very similar" to boots I was able to try on here (different model same brand)
  14. You see Hajime mashite in all the books but you dont hear anyone actually say it. All the people I met say Yoroshiku (for short) or yoroshuku onegai shimasu (in full). It's something you say when you meet someone for the first time. Similar to nice to meet you in use, but not really similar in meaning. genki desu ka? can be directly substituted to how are you? and can be used in the same situations.
  15. definately get him the giant condom thing to go over the cast for showering... order it asap, by the time you need it you wont want to wait for days for it to arrive. Broken ankle was one of the most frustrating things I have ever had to put up with. not the one I had but this sort of thing http://www.showerdri.com/
  16. I was just trying to figure out how much damage the rain done when I cam across this discription of current conditions "Very good skiing and riding on firm spring snow with a frost dried surface. Main trails have been groomed overnight providing a grippy corduroy surface. Tracked and packed firm spring snow with a frost dried surface in off piste areas." Not quite sure what to imagine the snow might be like after reading that, it's "very good" though.
  17. The stronger it is, the less you smoke, the less you smoke the lower the chance you are damaging your lungs. Does that not lead to the conclusion that pot is less damaging to lungs now than ever before. Getting too baked isn't that pleasent, people will smoke enough to their desired level of highness rather than smoke a fixed amount of pot. The "pot now is soo different to the stuff in the 60's" arguement us just used to try to convince the baby boomers that have tried pot and know it is not that bad that is is bad now.
  18. We got lots of rain. But dont worry! if you read the snow report its a good thing. Currently they have """"Very good skiing and riding on soft moist spring like snow.""" Thats why I get my snow updates from avalanche.net.nz rather than the ski resorts.
  19. Makes sence to me. I got a good book on the subject - I will post details when I get home as I cant remember the exact details. Writen by a Euro mountain guide. Well worth a look. Its not so much about the actual ski/snowboard skills as the ones required to get into / out of the mountains, avie stuff, bc travel etc..
  20. I went to an African restaurant when I was there. I liked it, however I had been trapped for years in a remote part of Japan with little other than the usual Japanese food so anything foreign was good.
  21. A deathly silence from the Niseko crew.... must be something to these stories.
  22. I heard that there was a clamp down on the hiring of illegal workers in Niseko and that my former employer is "in jail". When I enquired further "in jail" was reduced to "he got arrested..." so if that's true then the visaless working in Niseko may have come to an end.
  23. Some years the snow can be a bit late and the off piste can be full of sasa (I think thats what its called)green stalks with leaves on top. You can ski through them when they are not too thick but its better when they are buried. If you can leave it a week or 2 then it is almost garanteed to be covered by then. Ski areas will be quieter later on Jan, and cheaper. I would go later if I were you.
  24. My brother is likely to be there - he'll be keen. Don't worry about being confusing, the people you are looking for would know exactly what you mean.
  25. For ski in/ski out in NZ - you can stay on the snow at pretty much all of the club fields, snow park and Cardrona. One of my best skiing experiences was staying at Mt Cheeseman for a week.
