  1. Yup - I agree - you should try it. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

And nah - smartphones can't suck any data off the net if there's no data plan!

So - 300 calls of up to 10mins each or a total of 10 mins (that would be a bit strange - who would make 300 calls and use less than 10 mins total?!!!!

Anyway, something to look into! I don't really like the android/google experience so I wouldn't really be interested in a free android phone - my last docomo phone is/was an android, didn't like it at all, turned off all wifi (no data of course), texting was a PITA...

Gotta get back up your way sometime, Wiggles - car's still running wonderfully with it's new (well, ok, a few years old now) battery still going gangbusters - it's probably love a long run uphill! :)

  2. I don't know the end cost but the headline cost of 1GB a month on Y! Mobile is 3000 yen. 3GB is 4000.

That's for smartphone data and 300 calls, not just calls and e mail like Willcom. Their target is cheapskates like me who've not got a smartphone yet.

If you're not on Softbank (part of Yahoo's group), you can switch to them and get a free phone by the sounds.

They only use budget phones, so no Iphone or Galaxy, but the review sites say the Nexus 5 is pretty good.

    Heya Wiggles! Howzitgoing?

Just passing by and happened to see this - is that '300 free calls' to any phone (including other companies) and does that include unlimited time?

If so, sounds like a good enough deal for me to think about myself.

I'm currently using an iPhone 3 (on a hacked OS which effectively unlocks it), for phone/SMS/wifi only. No data plan, just regular phone plan (the iPhone gives me a better texting experience than a regular phone) on docomo, which usually costs me around 2000 - 3000 yen a month, as I don't make so many calls. I switched out the SIM from my crappy docomo phone and it works fine on the iPhone, so if I could find a cheap plan with data included I'd consider switching. Most of the time I don't need a data plan cos I use Wi2 which has lots of available hotspots in town, and also lots of places have wifi anyway and I have home internet.... not interested in spending the crazy prices but if something reasonable shows up then that's another story....!

Edit to add - I paid 3000 yen for the iPhone 3 (well, it IS old but in great nick).... lucky bargain a few months back!

  3. I'm not sure about charges, but for a one-off like that if you don't have a bank account attached to it (I don't) you'll just wind up with a credit balance in your account so next time you buy something the charge(s) will be taken off that credit balance first before your CC. If it's a really large amount and you want the cash, rather than just whittling it away on future PP purchases, well then that's another story...

  4. I have no idea how much batteries on newer cars cost but the one on fjef's old 2001 (sedan) prius which I inherited cost¥150,000 to replace. Did that in late 2008 (or 9?), so the battery was about 7-8 years old then. It would probably still be going today but the car wound up sitting out in the inaka undriven for a few months, including thru a rainy season and the battery somehow shorted out. Hybrids need to be driven regularly as I found out... at that point it was either dump the car (worth nothing here without battery) or buy a new one and start using it in the city. I did the latter, the car is still running great, I love having it in the city - and battery is still running on full charge 4 years later. Last time I talked to fjef about the same model Prius he got when he went back to Canada, it was still going fine - on the original battery.

(Edited post:- note to self - don't type replies late at nite when needing sleep!

  5. Sunrise, due to my clumsiness we this year had to replace a couple of the bath wall panels. Apart from the materials cost, I was pleasantly surprised that the labor cost was fairly low -- two workers, most of a full day, and they had to completely remove the tub, replace the wall panels, then put it all back together again. Just FYI on possible costs.

Thanks DiGriz, good to know, I wonder how much a new tub costs... anyway if I can find a way to successfully clean it so much the better.

Dumbstick, I mentioned gaijin cos that's the only situation I know of. Oh wait, another one too - another gaijin - took a landlord to court for trying to rip her off out of getting her deposit back, probably similar kind of situation to the one I already mentioned, she also won, though I think it took a lot longer.

  6. congrats Rach, did you get the retina? I've had the mini for a year (before retina came out) - main reason I got it is that it's great for gigs - lyric book, and also iRealB is great for chord charts, sure beats lugging lots of books around, plus it transposes on the fly so easy to put it in my or someone else's key. Also if there's an internet connection I can grab lyrics for requests during breaks, and even learn songs on the fly watching them on youtube if necessary. Also some gigs I do require backing tracks, so the iPad's also good for that too at a pinch, though I usually use my iPod for that.

Other uses - the usual stuff - email, messages, surfing, maps, calendar, notes, etc... pics/vids, various music apps sometimes, and also as a controller for running music apps on my computer. Got a bluetooth touch sensitive stylus recently for mucking around in painting programs when stuck in places with nothing to do.

Mine is wifi only, if you're in the city and around shops/offices a lot and don't want to get something like WiMAX, I recommend checking out Wi2 - it's about 350 yen a month and it will connect you with all Wi2 (including Yahoo) hotspots. Works on mobile and also laptops/computers.

  7. I know someone (gaijin) where the landlord tried to blame them for damage, she took him to court (with lots of photos) and won. Another person told me that after 10 years it's all wear and tear, but I guess it depends. You could actually contact tenants right associations or some kind of official tenant association to find out. Tenants have a lot more rights here than you'd imagine. It's apparently very hard to evict a tenant, even if you have good reason to, for instance...

I've been in my place over 10 years, and have wondered about how that will go down when I finally move out one day. There's a bit of carpet damage - but there are no longer carpets in the other apartments, every time someone moved out of one they'd replace them with lino, so they'll do the same in my case so that might be wear and tear. Some floorboards are a little loose, I'm not going to pay for that, not my fault, I've told them about it and they dont' really want to do anything while I'm there cos they'd have to pull up the carpets, which is hard to do when there's furniture, etc, in the place... some wallpaper has peeled on a wall outside the bathroom from moisture - they said they'd do that next time I go away (ie if I'm gone for at least several weeks). The only thing I'm thinking of that might be a big issue could be some clove oil stains on the bathtub. (clove oil is good for mould, little did I know that you can't leave it on bathtubs for long or it'll stain)... it's a blue tub, so not sure if I can get the stains out -

Slight thread hijack - if anyone happens to have any advice on how to remove the stains, please let me know - it's not a Japanese style tub, it's western style. I'm guessing it's acrylic, but perhaps it's fibreglass. Not sure how to tell the difference. The apartment block I think was built in the mid 80s (guessing).. any help on that greatly appreciated - a new tub mightn't be too costly but ripping the old one out and installing it could be, and I'm not sure if that would be part of wear and tear... for all I know they might charge for it and then get a professional cleaner to get the stains out without me realizing it's possible!

Okay, back on topic... congrats on the new place, and good luck with the deposit DumbStick.

  8. It's happened a few times to me, I ignored as well. One particular time after awhile I started getting letters from a solicitor acting on their behalf threatening legal action if I didn't pay. (forgotten who the carrier was, FedEx, DHL, or someone...) In the end I called the solicitor with my intention to pay, then I had a family emergency overseas and totally forgot about it, but they never contacted me again, so I guess they just let it go... it was only something like 2000 yen... probably cost them way more than that to pay the solicitor....

  9. Chriselle - not true about Logic - lots of pro studios and pro musicians/audio folk still using it as their main... Of course Pro Tools continues to be the main pro studio setup like it's always been. Lots of pro people tend to also use both - with Logic more for composition and arranging and Pro Tools more for tracking and mixing - esp film composers, etc...

Even GB has it's uses - it's great for throwing down quick ideas... That being said, I hear where you're coming from re FCX etc...

And now back to your regular station, GG I'm glad you're enjoying your new iMac.

  10.

Sunrise, iphone 4's have mini sims. I have some language apps and other really useful stuff on my phone, so im pretty keen to keep it if I can.

Ah yes, that's what the issue was, starting to remember now - I think you can cut the SIM on a regular prepaid to fit. I'm sure you'll find that info on the web. I'll have a bit of a hunt over the weekend to find what I'd seen about that being done over here.

  11. You might have to buy a prepaid softbank phone, make sure the SIM is a USIM. Try Don Quijote stores, you can get the phone for about 2000 yen plus 3000 yen of prepaid. Then take out the SIM and put it in your iPhone. Don't tell them that's what you're going to do of course.. caveat - cant' confirm this works for an iPhone 4, but it does for 3. I haven't got time right now but if you're still stuck by tomorrow PM me (or post here again) and I'll try and find out more from the folks that have tested it....
