What makes powder desirable?

No criticism here. I think most will agree with you on that one. -
Board Set-Up
enderzero replied to albino's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Great article NoFakie. Albino, I recommend taking a day to play with your stance. Set it up how you think you will like it and take two or three different runs, hitting some jumps, getting some speed, and maybe hitting a couple pow turns. Then stop and switch it up. There are almost infinite possibilities to your stance, but you may not be able to tell a huge difference between many of them. Ride what feels natural. -
All a bit ... odd
enderzero replied to miteyak's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Resorts never know when the season is going to start. Nothing changes this from year to year. They have to build this uncertainty into their business plan. The resorts in the US open when the snow is there. Obviously if there is a huge dump in October they might get caught off guard, but you would never hear them say they refuse to open until an arbitrary date in December. You think it may have something to do with the percentage of riders that go as an actual planned vacation versus those that just go up for the day on a whim? I look forward to reading Blair's article. I don't -
scratching boards
enderzero replied to newtoallthis's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Some occasional rail sliding in a park will be fine for your board. Shouldn't do an real permanent damage. If you are good enough to ride the number of rails it would take to really damage your board then you won't care about your snowboards. But fun in a concrete parking lot with an inch of snow can definitely cause some damamge. -
Helmets - skiers and snowboarders
enderzero replied to lin's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
So Miteyak, you gotta admit there is a breaking point somewhere. I am not arguing for or against the acceptance of helmets, and I agree with your point that if something only has little or no impact it should not be so touted. But do you agree that there is such a thing as a point where a helmet would save a life from a head injury that would kill? It may be that this is a small threshold, but just to be acadmeic I think it does exist somewhere. -
Snowboard Boot Revue
enderzero replied to enderzero's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Hey Ocean, Don't be afraid to try on a boot that seems like it would be way too small. I wear a size 12 shoe but a size 10 boot. You definitely want the smallest boot you can fit into. Your toes should just barely touch the front when standing upright. Then when you bend your knees they should pull away. Good Luck! -

..or like makkurokurosuke? I have never personally tele'ed, but I was under the impression most tele'ers were into the steeps. -

Snowboard Boot Revue
enderzero replied to enderzero's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Thanks guys. Man, I am still really beating my head about this decision. I am really thinking I could get away without buying new boots, but I am planning to come Japan for the winter in January and if I decided past then I needed new boots I would really regret not bringing them with me. 44,000 is a bit more than they cost here. Here they are $300US or 36,300Y. Everyone complains about finding large sizes in Japan. How about American size 10? Is that hard to find? -
...but not in Washington. Here is an article for those interested. ========================== Thursday, November 7, 2002 No, it's not ski season here yet Storms aren't dropping enough snow in Cascades SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES Hot to start skiing? Consider Colorado. The rains have returned to Western Washington after a long hiatus, but the storms carrying them are still relatively warm and wet and aren't dropping enough snow in the Cascade Range to let resorts there open for skiing. board rentals in Tokyo
enderzero replied to damian's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Dude, for your first time I really think you would be better off waiting until the lifts actually move. You are gonna be on the bunny chair your first day anyway. But if you try hiking your first day you'll last 30 minutes. It's not exactly like sledding down the neighborhood hill and running back up for another go. You want a little room to get the feel and you are gonna be tired and hurting for sure. I really do admire your enthusiasm. Crazy that just a month ago you were just kinda kicking around the idea of maybe taking up a winter sport. -
Should I ski or board???
enderzero replied to damian's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Deebee - after plenty of deliberation and sleepless nights, I have finally decided. Your only option is to become a skier. I hope you accept my word as gospel and promptly purchase everything you need for a good season of two-stickin.
