Arai is good for that. Naspa too, we have been to both. If you are in Tokyo, Yuzawa is much more convenient though.

We'd like to take 2 full weeks off and do some touring somewhere up Nagano/Niigata/Fukushima/Yamagata. That's the (probably impossible) dream. -

Houdaigi isn't the biggest, but the snow is usually really good and it's not crowded. Not a bad place. Only been once, but we enjoyed it. kev -
I have some lightweight plastic Ray Bans, had them for 3 years now and they're really good. kev

You might find Niigata to be more convenient - 80-90 mins on the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo to Yuzawa, and you have a choice of resorts in Yuzawa town. Have a good one
