  1. domokun - I'd be looking more for an e-marketing project manager/leader position. Melbourne had lots of interesting sounding stuff but I could find nothing (not even 'php programmer' etc) in Adelaide online.

What is commuting like in Melbourne? Sounds like traffic is bad, but how far do you have to live in order to get a reasonable place? Hope its nothing like Tokyo where even on a good salary you got a 90 min commute...

  2. I'm considering emigrating to Oz and have a few Qs.

I'm considering leaving Japan at the end of next year. The main reason to leave is that I have two kids and they will be starting school around that time, and my wife is adamant, and I generally agree, that they study English as their first language. (International school is not an option because I'm not willing to pay for it and dont like the idea of it anyway.)

At first I was thinking about returning to UK for convenience, however is very boring to me. London would be cool for me but having grown up there I dont want to subject my kids to that experience. also cost of living is crazy, and theres no decent beaches or ski resorts. So now we are looking at Oz, and we fond that I'm eligible for a visa even without sponsorship.

Oz is attractive because there seems to be a big shortage of skilled workers, therefore good opportunity for myself. The manager of my companies Oz office says its extremely difficult to find skilled young people over there in most industries. Additionally, cost of living seems good, and quality of life looks great. Finally it has a better connection to Japan than UK - seems like its easy to find a school that offers Japanese and there seems to be many saturday schools and JP communities.

Im considering Adelaide as first choice, because of cost of living and it just sounds great. Problem is there seems to be very few Web jobs going there so I would have to take what I can get. However I may get lucky and then itd be perfect. Safer bet may be to go to Melbourne and be able to pick a job that will provide the kind of environment and career potential I need, however I wont have the quality of life as Adelaide (because house prices higher).

    Some burning Qs:

    - Is there a smoking ban in Australia?

    - Melbourne or Adelaide?

    - Is it cheap to get to SE Asia?

    - What is the typical work environment like? Similar to UK? More relaxed? A lot of the jobs talk more about benefits (4 day week, redbull on tap etc) than responsibilities which sounds v.nice.

    - Can you get premiership football live on sky tv?

    - Compared to Japan, what is expensive/cheap?

  3. I normally go Nagano city and stay with family there. Nagano city to hakuba is about 50mins or so.

The 50% discount sounds like too much hassle, I'd save an extra 2000yen on that 10000yen journey but it'd be too much stress trying to get it right, not to mention getting two ETC cards!

  4. I also do not follow logic of the above, and I've never experienced any 50% discount anywhere.

When I go to Nagano from Kansai I make sure I leave at about 18:00 to arrive at 00:05AM and get the 30% night discount. Its actually the time most convenient to drive for me anyway so the discount is a nice free bonus.

  5. My gym is AXTOS and they also demanded that I get their credit card.

I disagreed heatily with the principle, but applied anyway because I dont have a JP CC and thought it may be useful sometimes, plus its got no fees. Also its the only gym around and its brand new so I really wanted to join.

Anyway, they rejected my application, presumably cos I gave them the bank details of my current account which also hovers around the 10man mark instead of my proper savings account. So now they take the fees from my bank directly instead (actually it bounced cos I used the wrong hanko or something so I can pay cash until they fix it)

Conclusion: if they force u to get a CC and you dont want to, just give bogus details so they decline to issue to CC and then pay via bank ac or cash.

  6. My point was that most people need a job to give their life structure and routine to take their mind off the very unpleasant reality that our life has no purpose and eventually we will die. I think most people cannot survive without this, and that explains why rich old wives do voluntary work in charity shops, or why people with slacker jobs spend all their time on the internet or chatting etc. Of course this is just a generalization, it doesnt apply to all people.

I love my work and the challenge it provides, its rewarding and I progress myself much more than if I was rich and could spend my time as I liked. I am sometimes challenged to learn new technologies and other times I have total freedom to pick whatever tech interests me (ruby on rails, java etc) and start developing with it - I have very little pressure in terms of deadlines and I have total freedom (within business needs) to make web/intranet content/functions. Without a job I doubt I could push myself through that road in the same way, unless I was making my own business. For now I enjoy work as much as I enjoy snowboarding, backpacking, reading etc. Maybe in a few years I wont be saying that but for now it is the case. The only thing I would change is if I could have 40 days holiday a year instead of 20, and be in a more interesting part of Japan (Nagano/Tokyo/Niseko).
