  1. classic useless worker story...

I was driving home to work when I used to live out in the inaka...construction as usual with 5000000 redlights flashing to make sure you dont drive into the new hole in the road they made...

In front of the mess is a cardboard cutout of a traffic guard with a mechanical arm that moves up and down holding a the standard issue red batton...and right next to this cardboard image was a real live person doing the same exact thing...

wish I had my camera on me for that one...classic! lol.gif clap.gif

  2. I need to get in on some of this info...

so what happens if I don't do anything when I leave here?? like keep my gaijin-card, keep my visa status, etc...

where do I get forms for my pension rebate??

who can be my tax representative??

can I still get a tax refund for taxes I have paid in 2004?

of course, like db, I need to do all this without any mention of my ward taxes ;\)

and how about just not paying my keitai bills??

hehe...just tell me how to maximize my scam

  3. I saw this movie last week and I really enjoyed it. What impressed me the most was just how it was filmed...the ability to move between the cold formal concrete tokyo and a warmer more organic tokyo. In fact, it captured my impressions of this city and Japan in a way that really shocked me; I didn' think it could be captured in that format.

The story itself is also good...although slow and subtle. But that is why I like it...it is not your typical hollywood flick.

    my impressions...

  4. what I want to know is why they dont give more sick-days????

In my 1st job in Japan they gave 0 sick-days...thats right, if you were too sick to work it came out of your paid-vacation days... mad.gif mad.gif

On more than one occasion 1 dude spread his disease to our entire group...that is about 15 people...we all got sick...because nobody wants to waste a vacation day...

my current job gives me 2 sick days...WEAK!

  5. I have much to say on this topic, as db hinted...

hey, skiing isnt my only interest you know :p

anyway, 128 is pretty crap if you ask me...and 256 is kind of overkill, as it does not sound much better than 192, but takes up much more space (we are talking mp3...)

what are you listening habits?? is your pod only for when you are on the go, or is it now the heart and soul of your home digital music center??

I think a good general rule is to have on CDs (for archiving purposes) the highest quality audio you can get. This means its original format (no lossy encoders), or some type of lossless format (like .flac, .shn, etc...). For memory reasons, music you take on the go can be compressed using your favorite format at a bitrate that makes you happiest (192mp3s sound find to me...).

I eventually will have a music hard-drive containg all of my cds in a lossless format (.flac, because it supports id3 tags). My stereo will be connected to my computer, and my music will be played with all its original fidelity. When I am on the road, I will convert my files to mp3, or ogg and stick it in my Rio Karma. I can then put my cds in the attic (until my gf drops my harddrive again losing all its contents mad.gif )

    digital rocks!

  6. IIII...

there is no "best one"...it really is subjective.

AAC is macs pet, just like wma belongs to windows...of course iTunes is going to convert to AAC. But that is where iTunes falls short, as it does not give you more encoding options (like ogg, wma, etc). For many people that is just fine, for me it is not.

  7. hey V...

    quick tutorial on digital music...

    1) mp3s, aac, ogg, wma, etc. are all lossy audio formats. This means that they are NOT CD quality

    2) bitrate is a measure of how many bits (digital information) were used to represent a piece of audio. Higher bitrate generally means better sound quality and larger file sizes.

    3) CD quality would be around 44,100x16x2 bits/sec (for a stereo recording)

    4) What it boils down to is your personal preferecne on where you want to be on the audio quality v. file size curve, and what sounds good to you!

Each format does its own thing...If I am listening to lossy audio, I prefer ogg. Ogg files tend to sound better and are smaller size than mp3s of comparable bitrates (and aac,I think).

  8. I have 2 pairs of skiis in rotation (2 more back in the states, but I have no use for them now...)

back in the day I remember picking skis that were like a fist or 2 taller than me...but like everyone said above, now it is about shape and purpose...

there were definetly a few peak runs in niseko when I wished my 180 v-explosives were more like 190s...but otherwise, I find 180 to be a perfect length for the type of riding I do (for my mid-fat and fattys...)

  9. very nice veronica...

but that feature is actually a little different than gappless playback...good, but not perfect...does it make 2 tracks into 1? so if an album has 5 tracks that all run into eachother, this feature would combine them into 1? Not so ideal for my listening habits, but I could be misunderstanding the feature.

for example, my karma can x-fade between any tracks because the player does gapless decoding...what you are talking about takes place on the encode end...what that means is that you need to know before-hand if you want that feature enabled for a particular album...

    anyway, enjoy your porta-dj!

  10. just thought Id come in here and spoil the iPod fun...

I have a 20gb rio karma...I think it is the better player if you are really into audio specs/options...

    it plays more formats (mp3,wma,flac(lossless!!),ogg)

it has a much longer battery life (15hrs)

has gapless playback (try playing a live album on your ipod...or a classic like dark side of the moon where tracks flow into each other...dont think ipod can do it. unless you like silence gaps between your tracks)

anyway...daps are awesome! truly amazing gadgets whatever brand you end up with...
