  1. Somebody mentioned speed limits on the highway, and for the most part I agree that 80km is just silly, but some highways are just too curvy that you can't see so far ahead, like in Kobe heading towards Tarumi, so I can see the need for a slower speed limit because there often seem to be fender benders because people drive too fast and can't see what's ahead of them. But, heading out of Kyoto towards Nagoya you can see for kilometers ahead of you! why are they 80 there??? WTF!

Wintervacation, if somebody is going 160 and sitting in the right lane, I have no problems with that! That's cool. Problem is that there are so many tools who sit in the right lane doing 80 or 100 and just slow down traffic because they're not passing people and going the same speed as the car next to them That's what I hate.

On the flip side of people driving so slow on the highways, I hate it when so many cars are doing 50-60 in neighborhoods with kids playing. I don't understand how they think that is ok. They drive too fast in small neighborhoods and too slow on the highway. Can't those ripoff license centers teach anything practical to their students?

  2. Rach, I drank things like Jack&coke in college, and even drank one bottle one night which had me all over the show and basically put me off that stuff until the last five plus years or so. I've always loved tequila and really enjoy shooters with it, but it has taken me quite a long time before I'd even consider having something like this. My dad has an amazing collection which has had a huge influence on me when I go back. He's got 50-60 bottles of all sorts of top shelf bottles. I'm not knowledgeable about it at all. I just enjoy a nice drink, so I try to learn from my friends and try new types of scotch/whisky. The Pig&Whistle at Shijo Keihan in Kyoto has one of the better collections I've seen around, and the last time I went to there the guy working the counter was extremely knowledgeable, so my friend and I talked with him for a while. I don't like the stuff outside of winter much, but like how it warms me up, and the taste of it.

  3. Students on bicycles riding against the flow of traffic (or anybody for that matter), people who pull out in front of you without looking and force you to slam on the breaks, and people who sit in the right hand lane of the highway for absolutely no reason all give me a great reason for making sure my high beams and my horn work - personally I like a 20 second horn when given the opportunity ;)

  4. Agree, depends on the level of their lie and what it's for. Is it a white lie? Did they screw up big time and are just trying to cover their ass? Personally, I can handle people easier if they just come out with it and admit they screwed up rather than BSing me. Of course, if they're Japanese and you're dealing with the whole Tatemae stuff that goes on and they're actually meaning something else, then that's a whole new ball game as that can be hard to read sometimes.

  5. I enjoy drinking hard stuff in the winter, but usually winter only as I'd prefer something cold to cool me down when it's hot outside and I don't drink this stuff on the rocks or mixed because I think it takes away from the flavor. So, I've been enjoying:

    12 year Jameson

    12 year Macallan

    17 year Hibiki

    10 year Talisker

    And 16 year Lagavulin

Just my small collection and not very impressive, but I enjoy a nice drink or two in the evenings, and sometimes in the afternoon too! So, what do you drink? Got any recommendations for next time I'm up for a bottle?

  6. Nice one Teikiatsulover

I have shed close to 11kgs since summer and have found lots of clothes to wear in my wardrobe that haven't been worn for years!! People in work have also commented on my weight loss......it does feel nice :)

11kgs?! Nice job! I weighed again and now over 4 kgs. I'm not worried about weight loss as much as losing the spare tire, and I've lost most all of it, not all mind you, but a good deal of it so I'm extremely happy with the results. I wonder if I had tried something else if the results had been the same. Rode my bike last weekend and shaved 4 minutes off my 30K time. Definitely feel stronger and lighter on my feet. Tubby, what are you doing to lose weight/tone up?

  7. So, it's been about six weeks since getting into working out. First thing I've noticed, my pants are too big now. My hand basically fits sideways between my stomach and the pants whereas before it was like two fingers. My wife is shocked at how much I've changed and now worries about me going drinking with the boys ;) I've lost close to four kilos. Just under to be exact. I'm not really fussed with the weight as much as how I look and feel. My face doesn't look as fat when I smile too. Colleagues have pointed out the same thing too. I'm very pleased with the results. Upper and lower body strength is very different from before. For me, I think these things work very well but I also hate wasting time and money to go to a gym!!

  8. BB, actually Dynaland /Takasu are in Gifu! So, a little bit more of a trek thann hachikita, but are better in my opinion. I'm in Nara, but getting to Kyoto stn is very easy as Nara city itself is actually right on the border of Kyoto. I don't know if there is much accumulation yet, so not sure what the deal is yet. But, I'd be happy to pm my phone number if the resort is going to open. If it's just one run and it's artificial snow I'm not sure if I'll be up for the drive. Lemme call Jiji tomorrow and post back after I've spoken with him.
